Pierce Delivers Goodbye Message for the Ages

BOSTON – Boston sports fans might be storming the streets
by the end of Sunday night.
During the day, however, they stood on their feet as they
said goodbye to one of their heroes.

週日夜裏，Boston的運動迷們可能會在街頭掀起一陣狂潮。

Paul Pierce played his 560th and final game at TD Garden Sunday afternoon
as a member of the visiting Los Angeles Clippers.
But he sure wasn't sent off like a visitor.

星期天下午，Paul Pierce 以一個快艇球員的身份，迎接他第560場、
同時也是在TD Garden的最後一場賽事。

Instead, he was sent off in style, like the Celtics icon that he is.

Pierce, who started the game in his first action since Dec. 31,
was moved to tears at the 7:03 mark of the first quarter
when a tribute video was played during a timeout on the arena's jumbotron.
The video lasted for 55 seconds and was followed by
an overwhelming standing ovation for the following two-plus minutes,
during which the franchise's second-leading scorer and
2008 Finals MVP waved to the crowd and wiped away tears from his eyes.

自從跨年夜之後終於再度先發的Pierce在第一節剩下7：03時的暫停中，
看到球場大螢幕播放向他致敬的影片，他感動落淚。
當這支55秒的影片結束，隨之而來的是全場起立鼓掌超過兩分鐘之久，

“Just the showering of love in here, man,” he said of being moved
to tears in the middle of the game.
“I don't get a showering of love in every arena like Kobe did
in his farewell tour, so this was like my last goodbye,
not only for the Celtics, but also for the NBA.”

「我沒有像Kobe一樣，他的告別旅程裡到每個場館都能浸沐在滿滿的愛裡面，

During the emotional stop in the action, Boston's entire team stood
and clapped as it faced toward Pierce and the Clippers bench.
That moment, in Brad Stevens' eyes, was bigger than the game at hand.

在這動人的時刻，Boston的成員也全體起立，
面對著快艇隊板凳區、面對著Pierce鼓掌。
那一刻，在Brad Stevens眼中，比這場比賽要來得更具意義。

“It's special for them to see it,” Stevens said of his players
soaking the moment in. “It's special for them…
he's one of the icons of Boston sports,and that's a special group of people.”

The coach then revealed the comments he made to his prized rookie,
Jaylen Brown, as the moment unfolded.

Stevens explained, “I was actually sitting next to Jaylen and saying,
‘This is unique. This isn't the way it is everywhere.’”

Rarely do fans treat their former players this way,
particularly on the biggest sporting day of the year
in the United States – a day dedicated to another sport,
and in this instance, to another team that plays its home games
25 miles down the road. But Boston's faithful still somehow
made Sunday feel as if it was all about Pierce, their former captain.

很少有球迷是這樣對待他們過往的成員，尤其今天又是美國一年一度的體育盛事，
應該是熱衷於其他賽事的一天，出賽那一支隊伍的主場只不過距離25英里遠，

They chanted, they cheered, they cried, and many of the 18,624 fans
who filled the building held signs of appreciation,
loud and proud for all to see. Some of them read:

Pierce commented after the game, “Everywhere I looked I saw 34 jerseys.
Everywhere I looked I saw Pierce shirts… posters.
It was just… it was just beautiful to watch and be a part of this.”

賽後Pierce說：「我看到的每個地方都有34號球衣，每個地方都有Pierce的衣服和海報，

Pierce checked out of the game during that first timeout
and remained in his warm-ups for the following two-plus hours.
The fans remained hopeful, however,as they attempted to
convince Clippers coach and former Celtics coach Doc Rivers
to put Pierce back into the game throughout the remainder of the afternoon.

ranging from “We-Want-Paul-Pierce!” to “Thank-You-Paul-Pierce!”
to “We-Want-Paul!” With 19.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter,
and with the game's result no longer in question as Boston held
a comfortable lead, Rivers finally obliged.

to check in as Al Horford went to the free-throw line.
Pierce pulled off his warm-ups, walked to the scorer's table,
and then replaced Blake Griffin, who gave him a hug before walking to the benc
h.

Horford converted on his second free throw and the Clippers then
took the ball up court in the other direction.
Austin Rivers ran a pick-and-pop at the top of the key with
Pierce as the screen-setter, and Pierce slipped off the screen to
30 feet away from the hoop on the left wing.
Rivers, understanding the moment, got the ball into Pierce's hands,
and No.34 quickly went into his shooting motion.

Horford投進了第二個罰球，快艇隊從球場的這一頭發動進攻。

And, just as so many of Pierce's clutch shots had before, it was going in.

The crowd silenced as the ball traveled through the air and toward the hoop.
Then it exploded as the shot fell through the net.

How could the crowd's reaction be best described?
Think of what the building would look and sound like
if Pierce had just hit the game-winner in Game 7 ofthe NBA Finals.

Rivers couldn't even put the play into words following the game.
Pierce tried his best.

“I'm glad I was able to cap it off, my last game in the Garden,”
Pierce said of the shot. “At least I can say I put one last bucket in.”

one of the greatest moments in the last two decades of Celtics history.

That shot was Pierce's goodbye message to them,
delivered on the same day they stood on their feet
and said goodbye to him in overwhelming fashion

還記得在某個加班的週六 偷偷溜到早餐店看當時PP還在巫師的那年季後賽
對老鷹那最後一擊雖然不算 但和今天的最後一擊一樣已經深植於我的腦海。
