Under-18s report: Aston Villa 3 Chelsea 8
Sat, 31 Jan 2015
The Chelsea youth team went eight points clear at the top of the south
section of the Under-18 Premier League with an impressive victory today
(Saturday).
Schoolboy striker Ike Ugbo netted a hat-trick, midfielders Mukhtar Ali and
Charlie Wakefield scored a double apiece and Kyle Scott bagged a penalty
to give Joe Edwards' side another big win.
There were eight changes from the side that beat Swansea City in the FA
Youth Cup earlier in the week, and it was far from a perfect start for the
visitors as they suffered an injury and conceded the opening goal inside
five minutes. George Brady had picked up an early knock and was exposed
one-on-one while waiting to be replaced as Villa took an early lead.
However the young Blues, coming into the game as league leaders and having
beaten Villa 12-1 in the home game in October, responded swiftly and
strongly as they hit four goals without response. Ugbo levelled the scores
before Wakefield advanced down the right and finished calmly on the break
and then captain Scott converted a penalty after Ugbo was upended in the
box.
Chelsea went in at the break 5-2 up and added three more goals after the
restart as Ugbo completed his hat-trick and Ali fired a brace. The victory
gives the Blues an eight-point cushion at the top of the league with four
games of the regional programme remaining.
Manager Edwards reflected afterwards on a pleasing morning's work for his
side and praised their ability to adapt to a new shape away from home.
'We changed the shape coming into the game and started with a 3-4-2-1
which was designed to make sure we were solid at the back and had numbers
in midfield,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'The pleasing part of
the performance was our threat on the break and we were very clinical in
front of goal.
'Getting two goals back quickly was important and then we talked at
half-time about just keeping the intensity high because we were really
dominant and in control. Ugbo led the line up front really well and
Mukhtar Ali was probably the best player on the pitch in midfield.
'We wanted a good performance today but we also knew it was important to
get some points against a team behind us second in the league. We've
stretched the gap at the top and obviously our aim is to go into the elite
round but we also want to win our section so it was a good day all round
for us.'
The Chelsea Academy returns to action on Monday 2 February as Adi
Viveash's under-21s host league leaders Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
Kick-off is at 7.05pm and the game will be screened live on Chelsea TV.
