Our Under-21s took a second-half lead but were left with nothing to show
from an impressive display as Manchester United came from behind to win
the game.
Dominic Solanke scored his 26th goal of the season shortly after the
restart, following a first period that was tight and cagey with few
opportunities, yet United rallied after going behind and overturned the
score through a deflected free-kick and a header late on.
== Team news ==
Adi Viveash made two changes from the side that beat Southampton 5-3 at
Stamford Bridge last week as first team squad member Andreas Christensen
and wideman Charly Musonda came into the team. Christensen started at
centre-back alongside Jake Clarke-Salter, while Fankaty Dabo, who signed a
new contract to 2007 last week, and Jay Dasilva comprised the remainder of
the back four in front of Mitchell Beeney in goal.
Musonda and Izzy Brown provided the attacking support for striker Dominic
Solanke with Jordan Houghton captaining the team in midfield alongside
Charlie Colkett and Kasey Palmer (pictured top).
Man United's starting 11 contained seven players who have first team
minutes this season, including Rafael and Ashley Young, as well as recent
signing Victor Valdes. The average age of the Chelsea starting line-up was
just 17.9, four-and-a-half years younger than that of their hosts.
== First half ==
Opportunities in the opening exchanges were hard to come by for both sides
as much of the first 30 minutes was played out in an intense midfield
battle. Palmer fired wide of the far post before Rafael and Andreas
Pereira combined down the United right, requiring Clarke-Salter to read
the game quickly and arrive on the scene to snuff out the danger.
Christensen blocked bravely as Nick Powell took aim at goal with a
powerful strike but both sides remained organised without the ball, making
it difficult for the attacking side to create spaces and opportunities.
The half ended with a couple of goalmouth openings at both ends as
Dasilva's brilliant run down the left fashioned a chance for Palmer to
test Valdes, before Christensen and then Clarke-Salter produced blocks to
keep the scores level.
== Second half ==
Young curled a free-kick a couple of yards over Beeney's bar six minutes
after the restart but it was Viveash's side celebrating the opener in the
55th minute. A short pass back from Young to Tyler Blackett gave Brown the
invitation to press and he stole the ball and burst towards goal. With
Solanke supporting in the box, his fellow England youth international
supplied a perfect low cross for the striker to prod in at the back post.
The goal prompted the visitors into their brightest spell of the game and
Palmer's lovely flick worked a chance for Musonda from the left, although
Valdes did well to gather the rising attempt at his near post. The Spanish
keeper was kept busy as he pushed Palmer's bending free-kick over before
getting down low to his right to get fingertips to Brown's low effort.
However, Man United remained a threat and levelled the scores midway
through the half in rather fortuitous circumstances. Andreas Pereira's
well-struck free-kick was low and dangerous but took a key deflection off
a defender that wrong-footed Beeney and the ball nestled into the
unguarded corner of the goalkeeper's net.
Just as Chelsea's goal had inspired them into a strong period, so did the
hosts' as substitute James Weir had a shot quickly charged down. Pereira
then took aim from another set-piece, although this time Beeney was equal
to it as he dived to his right to push the ball behind.
The Chelsea keeper could do nothing 10 minutes later as the hosts took the
lead. A free-kick from the right was swung in dangerously and captain Tom
Thorpe rose highest to plant a firm header into the far corner and hand
his side all three league points.
Next up for the Academy is a league trip to Fulham for Joe Edwards'
Under-18s this Friday 13 February. The young Blues can guarantee finishing
top of the league's southern section with a win.
== Manager reaction ==
Speaking after the game to the official Chelsea website, Adi Viveash
reflected on a game in which he felt his side competed strongly against an
experienced side.
'We have to be proud of the way we played and how we competed physically
for 70 minutes against a very strong team,' he said.
'The players worked very hard within the system and executed the game plan
really well. We probably deserved to be more than 1-0 up but Valdes's save
from Izzy Brown proved to be a match-winning save in the end.
'We conceded two poor goals and didn't handle the situation at 1-1 well.
It's good for our young players to come up against first team players but
we have to learn quickly and understand that when we get into winning
positions, we have to be wiser to achieve what we want to achieve.'
