Under-21s report: Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0
Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Our Under-21s went down to a defeat on a freezing cold evening at Chester
as a goal early in both the first and second half gave Liverpool all three
league points.
Harry Wilson netted a penalty inside 10 minutes before Jerome Sinclair
added a second after the restart. Despite increased pressure as the game
wore on, the Blues were unable to reduce the deficit.
== Team news ==
There were three changes from the Under-21s' last league outing, a 2-1
defeat at Manchester United three weeks previously. Jamal Blackman
replaced Mitchell Beeney in goal, while Ola Aina and Fikayo Tomori came
into defence. Comprising the remainder of the back line were Fankaty Dabo
and Andreas Christensen.
The rest of the team was unchanged as Charlie Colkett and Jordan Houghton
continued at the base of midfield, with Kasey Palmer operating in the
number 10 role. Izzy Brown and Charly Musonda provided the attacking
supporter for striker Dominic Solanke.
== First half ==
The game started in a lively fashion in chilly Chester as both Brown and
Musonda fired early shots at goal, while Sergi Canos's low effort trickled
narrowly wide of Blackman's far post. However, the deadlock was broken
inside 10 minutes as Blackman was beaten from the penalty spot.
A strong run from Sinclair saw the forward advance into the box and the
referee adjudged that he was brought down illegally by Tomori. Wilson
stepped up from 12 yards and steered the ball confidently into the bottom
corner.
Liverpool remained in the ascendancy and fashioned good opportunities to
extend their advantage. Wilson escaped in behind but narrowly missed the
target before Blackman denied Canos with a strong save as he reacted
quickly to move off his line.
Adi Viveash's side grew into the half and Brown's deflected drive brought
a stop from Vigouroux, yet much of the attacking play broke down in the
final third and they went in with a slender deficit at the break.
== Second half ==
Brown had a sight at goal early after the restart but his shot was blocked
and Liverpool soon opened up a two-goal advantage. Sinclair advanced down
the left and outpaced Tomori on the outside before beating Blackman and
finding the far corner from a tight angle.
Chelsea responded by introducing Tammy Abraham from the bench and the
first-year scholar almost made an impact instantly. Receiving a lovely
floated pass forward from Musonda on his chest, the striker used his
strength well but prodded the ball just wide under close attention from a
defender.
Despite increased pressure in the latter stages of the game, the visitors
struggled to test Vigouroux in the Liverpool goal. Solanke headed wide
following a Musonda cross from the left but the Reds defended strongly to
hold on to the points.
== Manager reaction ==
Viveash reflected afterwards on a disappointing evening for his side.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a disappointing
performance. We started the game very slowly and in the first half we
needed to show more calmness on the ball and get closer to their players
off the ball.
'The penalty looked a bit soft and put us on the back foot but their two
front players are very good and their movement caused us problems. I
thought our best spell was for 10 minutes at the start of the second half
when we seemed to be getting more of a hold in the game but it was a
difficult night for us. We didn't show what we're capable of but it's
important to also say that Liverpool were very good and worthy of their
win.'
The Under-21s are next in action this Friday 6 March as they take on
Leicester City. Supporters should note that the venue for this fixture has
been changed from Aldershot Town to the Cobham training ground. The game
will be screened live on Chelsea TV, however we regret spectators will not
be admitted.
The date for our Under-19s' UEFA Youth League quarter-final has been
confirmed. They will take on Atletico Madrid at Cobham on Tuesday 10 March
with kick-off at 3pm. This match will also not be open to the general
public.
