https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/03/ fa-youth-cup-report--tottenham-hotspur-2-chelsea-0.html FA Youth Cup report: Tottenham 2 Chelsea 0 Thu, 5 Mar 2015 Our Under-18s went down to a first-leg defeat at White Hart Lane that leaves them with work to do at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight. The home side broke the deadlock moments before the interval through Joshua Onomah before substitute Kaziah Sterling added a second late on. It was largely a tight game in north London but Spurs were more clinical in front of goal to gain the advantage at the midway point of the semi-final. == Team news == Under-18s manager Joe Edwards made just one change from the extra-time quarter-final victory over Newcastle United, with Ruben Sammut replacing the injured Jake Clarke-Salter. There was also a change in shape as the holders lined up in a 3-4-3 system with a midfield diamond anchored by Sammut. Captain Charlie Colkett and Charly Musonda started further ahead, while Kyle Scott began in the number 10 role. With just one goal conceded in four ties this campaign, Bradley Collins continued in goal protected by a back three of Jay Dasilva, Ola Aina and Fikayo Tomori. At the other end, a front three of Dominic Solanke, Tammy Abraham and Izzy Brown formed an attack which have notched a combined 15 Youth Cup goals this season. Tottenham's starting side featured England youth international Kyle Walker-Peters in defence and recent first-team debutant Onomah skippered the side in midfield. == First half == Spurs started quickly and forced Collins into action inside the opening three minutes as striker Shayon Harrison escaped in behind and fired low. The Blues keeper was equal to it though, as he saved well with his feet and deflected the ball behind. Scott struck over and Abraham's effort was deflected behind for a corner as the visitors grew into the game over the first 25 minutes. However their increased control of possession didn't convert into a serious threat in front of goal as strikes from Solanke and then Musonda proved untroubling for Tom Glover between the Tottenham posts. At the other end, the advanced Walker-Peters fired an inviting centre across goal that narrowly evaded supporting attackers, however Tottenham did break the deadlock minutes before the break. The Blues failed to clear the danger after a home attack broke down and Onomah benefited from a fortunate ricochet eight yards out. The midfield man kept his strike low and beat Collins to hand the hosts a 41st-minute advantage. Walker-Peters defended well at the back post to steal the ball from Solanke in a promising position for the striker late in the half, so Spurs carried a slender advantage into the interval. == Second half == The Blues restarted strongly and had opportunities to level early on as Musonda shot over and Brown fired straight at Glover. With the hour mark approaching, they fashioned their best chance of the game for Solanke but his close-range effort was thwarted by a great save from the keeper. Kasey Palmer and Jeremie Boga were introduced, the latter for Brown who suffered a 'dead leg' when he went over an advertising hoarding having chased a ball. The substitutes brought precision and directness to our play in the final third and also created spaces in wide areas, which Edwards' side sought to exploit through full-backs Dasilva and Tomori. The former advanced and brought a good low save from Glover at the near post on 80 minutes. Yet Spurs remained a threat on the break and Anton Walkes sliced over from a decent opening as the game moved into the final 10 minutes. Kieran McKenna's side did grab a second goal moments later as substitute Sterling was supplied in down the left channel and finished confidently inside the far post. Chelsea pushed to reduce the deficit late on but the home side defended strongly and will bring a two-goal advantage into the Stamford Bridge second leg. == Manager reaction == Joe Edwards reflected afterwards on a tight first leg tie in which he felt Tottenham's ability to take their few chances proved the difference on the night. Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, he said: 'The general play was tight. We had a lot of action in their box in the second half but they took their chances. 'Some of the players seemed like they were feeling the effects of an Under-21 game on Monday night in their legs but that's not an excuse because two games a week is something these players have got to get used to. Jay Dasilva was outstanding and I felt we grew into the game. 'We got control of the ball and camped in their half in the latter stage of the game and I don't think that's something Spurs will look forward to coming up against in the second leg. That's something we have to take belief from. 'All the boys are aware of our history in this competition; for all the great journeys we've had in recent years, we've never done it the easy way. It's a setback but we all know that climbing mountains is what we're about in this competition and doing it in front of our supporters at the Bridge is what we want.' Our Academy are back in action tomorrow evening (Friday) as Adi Viveash's Under-21s host Leicester City in a league clash at Cobham. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and the game is being screened live once again on Chelsea TV.
