If Eden Hazard wants to be an icon at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho must set him
free

Eden Hazard is a wonderfully gifted player and you have seen a maturity
to his game this season.
The question now is whether he can go on to be one of the great players in
the world. If he is to do that, I think he will have to play in a slightly
different position.
One of the areas in which he has improved this season is in getting back
to defend on that left side but to see his talent flourish even more he
will have to be released from some of those defensive responsibilities and
be played a little more centrally.
He is already freed from certain defensive responsibilities but never in
the major games against the best teams.
In the centre of the pitch, you can hurt people more as you're right
across the whole pitch. But I'm not sure he'll be given that position.
Of course, there are players who operate wide and cut in: Ronaldinho did
it, Cristiano Ronaldo does it and so does Gareth Bale.
Hazard could do that but only in a team which has flying full backs to
provide the width. Chelsea don't really play like that — Cesar
Azpilicueta isn't really that kind of full back.
If Ashley Cole were in his prime and still at the club, he would have been
perfect for that.
How Mourinho accommodates Hazard and looks to build on his success is
going to be one of the most interesting features of next season.
