Under-18s report: Chelsea 3 Manchester City 3
Sat 9 May 2015
Our Under-18s played out an entertaining draw at Aldershot in their
penultimate game of the campaign. A first-half brace from Isaac
Christie-Davies put them in control before Tammy Abraham netted after the
restart for his 40th goal of an excellent campaign.
The comeback from Manchester City began swiftly as Paolo Fernandes beat
Jared Thompson with a neat finish before goals from Lukas Nmecha and
Bersant Celina late on earned the visitors a point.
The youth team play their final game of the season next weekend at Aston
Villa.
== Team news ==
There were two changes from the side that recorded an impressive 2-1 win
at Manchester United a week previously as Tammy Abraham and Kyle Scott
returned to the team. The system remained unchanged as Joe Edwards started
once again with a 3-4-2-1 shape that saw Abraham lead the line supported
by Scott and Christie-Davies.
An all-schoolboy defence consisting of Dujon Sterling, Josh Grant and
Trevoh Chalobah protected Under-16 keeper Jared Thompson in goal, while
Mukhtar Ali and Ruben Sammut formed the midfield base.
== First half ==
The Blues started brightly in Aldershot with Abraham firing the ball into
the side netting and both Christie-Davies and Sammut efforts blocked well
by defenders in sky blue. Yet the hosts' strong opening was rewarded after
eight minutes as Christie-Davies broke the deadlock.
Muheim was released down the left by an incisive forward pass from Ali and
the Swiss youth international delivered an inviting low centre across goal
that required the simplest of finishes at the far post from the supporting
Christie-Davies.
Chelsea continued to impress with their flowing football and a move
involving Wakefield and Christie-Davies saw the ball swept from right to
left in the final third. A chance was fashioned for Muheim but the
forward's high shot was palmed away by Kjetil Haug in the City goal.
Haug could do nothing to keep out Christie-Davies after 20 minutes though
as the midfielder shifted the ball neatly and rifled a drive into the
bottom corner for his sixth goal of the campaign.
Scott curled an effort narrowly over and Wakefield fired wide at the end
of another flowing Blues attack. City did provide a reminder of their
threat as Thompson was forced to race off his line and thwart the danger
at the feet of Lukas Nmecha while Sadou Diallo's shot deflected narrowly
over the bar.
== Second half ==
The second period burst into life after 10 minutes with two goals in quick
succession at either end of the field. Abraham was denied by Haug from
close range following great work from Wakefield down the left but the
striker was not to be denied his 40th goal of the season moments later.
Scott fed Christie-Davies down the right channel and the midfielder,
hunting his hat-trick, fired a fierce strike at goal that was pushed away
by the goalkeeper. Yet Abraham was on hand, as so often this season, to
turn the loose ball into the back of the net as he joined fellow Academy
striker Dominic Solanke on reaching the milestone goalscoring feat.
City reduced the deficit almost instantly as Paolo Fernandes arrowed a
strike into the top corner from 12 yards out while Bersant Celina shot
just over as the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the game.
It was capped by a second goal after 83 minutes as Fernandes' drive from
distance was pushed away by Thompson but only into the grateful path of
Nmecha, who headed into an empty net and handed his side a lifeline.
It was a lifeline they exploited four minutes later as they completed the
comeback and levelled the scores. Celina took aim from a free-kick 20
yards out and curled a brilliant effort into the top corner that left
Thompson with no chance and ensured the points were shared.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards reflected afterwards on a game that provided a learning curve
in development for his young team. Speaking to the official Chelsea
website, he said: 'It's a game today between two of the top teams with a
lot of top players and I thought we started really well.
'We played some outstanding football and made them pay with three goals
but the momentum changed in the second half and City upped their game.
When you don't get a result it does give you a bit more reflecting to do
and the biggest learning curve for us today is that as you work your way
up, even when you're feeling comfortable the game is very rarely over.'
Edwards also had words of praise for striker Abraham, who netted his 23rd
league goal of the season and 40th in all competitions.
'Tammy didn't have too many clear-cut chances today but his enthusiasm for
the game and desire for the team to win was excellent again,' said
Edwards. 'It was a real striker's finish from a couple of yards out and 40
goals in your first year in the youth team is outstanding and fully
deserved.'
