In a cagey, tactical game of few real chances, Benfica took the lead at a crucial time in the final minute of the first period courtesy of Diogo Goncalves, before goals from Joao Carvalho and Ruben Dias in four second-half minutes settled the contest and sealed the group points for the visitors. There were six changes from the side that last featured for our Under-21s in a 3-3 league draw with Reading three weeks previously. Bradley Collins retained his place in goal protected by a defence consisting of Fankaty Dabo, Fikayo Tomori, Dion Conroy and Kevin Wright. Tammy Abraham led the line up front, supported in attack by captain Charly Musonda, Josimar Quintero and Reece Mitchell. Charlie Colkett continued his return from injury to make his first start of the season alongside Mukhtar Ali in midfield. Both sides won their opening group games and the contest began in a cagey, even fashion as chances were limited and sights at goal restricted. Ali volleyed high over the bar after Musonda’s cross had been headed clear and Mitchell forced a routine save from Miguel Santos in the Benfica goal during a quiet opening 20 minutes. The Blues had to remain patient in possession as the well-organised Portuguese side proved difficult to break down, while also presenting a threat of their own. Sancidino Silva couldn't quite stretch enough to connect to Goncalves's delivery from the left, while Renato Sanches squandered a decent opening as he dragged a low strike wide. Quintero came close to breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes, his deflected drive missing the target by inches, before Collins produced a crucial save to keep the scores level. An incisive break forward saw Sanches slide a perfect pass through for Carvalho and the forward looked destined to find the back of the net, however the goalkeeper flung an instinctive hand up as he went to ground and pushed the dinked effort away from danger. Abraham prodded Colkett's teasing centre just wide under pressure from the defender before Benfica grabbed the lead in the final minute of the half. Collins produced a fine save to keep out Gilson Costa's header, however Goncalves was on hand to turn the loose ball into the back of the net from a few yards out. The second half started in much the same pattern as the first had followed, with Benfica even more inclined to stay compact and keep their shape following the late goal in the first half. Santos pushed Musonda's bouncing free-kick away before two goals in four minutes shortly after the hour mark effectively put the game to bed. Carvalho netted the first of the quickfire double, poking the ball past Collins at the back post following Goncalves's driven low cross from the right, before substitute Dias made it 3-0 with a finish that squirmed underneath Collins. Substitute Kyle Scott fired over and Conroy's free-kick struck the wall as the home side searched for an unlikely route back into the game late on. Yet Benfica had demonstrated their experience throughout the game and were able to keep us largely away from danger as they claimed all three points in Group B. == Manager reaction == Andy Myers, who takes the lead from the dugout in this competition, spoke to the official Chelsea website after the game and reflected on a learning experience for his players against tough opposition. 'It was an open game in the first half with both teams trying to play, without really showing a cutting-edge. We defended a few of their crosses quite well but obviously conceding right on half-time is a blow for us. 'We started the second half well and started to get a bit of control in the game but then we condeded two poor goals from a defensive point of view. 'It's a good learning curve for the boys; Benfica were physically very strong and they obviously play in their second tier as well but we have to learn that against good teams you need to get everything right. Having said that, I can't fault our effort and I was pleased with the way we kept going for the whole game, especially having not played for three weeks.' -In other news for the Under-21s this week, Adi Viveash's side were drawn against holders Southampton in the round-of-32 of the domestic Premier League Cup. A date for the away game will be confirmed in due course.
