Under-21s report: Chelsea 0 Manchester City 2
Mon 26 Oct 2015
Chelsea Under-21s went down to an unlucky defeat at Aldershot this
evening (Monday).
A free-kick from Bersant Celina gave the visitors a 20th-minute lead,
however the hosts controlled much of the game and created a number of
promising opportunities that they could not convert past Manchester City
keeper Ian Lawlor.
Thierry Ambrose wrapped up the points on the break late on for City as a
largely positive display went unrewarded for Adi Viveash's side.
There were four changes from the side beaten by Benfica in the Premier
League International Cup 10 days previously as Ola Aina, Jake
Clarke-Salter, Kyle Scott and Isaac Christie-Davies came into the starting
team. Aina and Clarke-Salter were joined by Fikayo Tomori and Fankaty Dabo
in a back four protecting Bradley Collins in goal.
Tammy Abraham continued to lead the line up front, supported by Charly
Musonda, Reece Mitchell and Christie-Davies. Captain Charlie Colkett lined
up alongside Scott in central midfield.
Thirteen of the 22 starters played some part in last season's FA Youth Cup
final, eight for Chelsea and five for City. Colkett skippered that side,
and lifted the trophy after a 5-2 aggregate victory, while Abraham netted
three goals across the two legs.
It was the Chelsea number nine who kickstarted a bright opening spell
tonight by coming within inches of handing the hosts an early advantage.
Demonstrating both power and balance, the striker escaped the attention
of two defenders before rounding Lawlor in the City goal, however his
effort struck the base of the post and then ricocheted back off him behind
for a goal-kick.
Down the other end, a well-timed sliding challenge from Aina thwarted
Ambrose's progress towards goal, before Collins produced an excellent stop
to deny Rodney Kongolo's header from point-blank range as the midfielder
got on the end of Celina's inswinging corner from the left.
The game settled after a frenetic start and the Blues looked to gain some
control of the tactical battle, though a misplaced pass from Colkett in
midfield and subsequent foul by Clarke-Salter handed the visitors a golden
opportunity. Celina, something of a specialist over the dead-ball, did not
disappoint with the free-kick as he curled a good effort over the wall and
into the top corner of Collins' goal.
Musonda appeals for a penalty were turned away before the referee did rule
in our favour to award a free-kick for a late challenge on Scott on the
edge of the box. Musonda stepped up and looked to match Celina's effort
from moments previously, however Lawlor kept him out with an excellent
flying save to push the ball behind. Clarke-Salter connected to the
resulting corner but his header was rather more straightforward for the
City stopper.
Adi Viveash's side finished the half with a brighter spell of possession
and patient build-up play, though they were unable to trouble Lawlor
further before the break.
The City goalkeeper pushed away Christie-Davies's low drive after
Colkett's floated pass had deceived Pablo Maffeo, while the visiting
stopper remained busy as the hour mark approached. Colkett's low
inswinging free-kick was touched towards goal by Aina but the keeper
reacted smartly to kick the ball away from danger.
The hosts were dominating proceedings as the half wore on, with Patrick
Vieira's side happy to remain compact and hold on to their lead. Abraham
did well to take down Tomori's forward pass on his chest but his shot
lacked the direction to trouble Lawlor, before Mitchell saw an effort
blocked after neat play between Musonda and Abraham, the former now
operating from the right flank.
Chances continued to come and go for the young Blues, with Abraham firing
straight at Lawlor and then Musonda poking wide a great opportunity at the
back post after Colkett had dug out a cross from the byline. City fired a
warning as Aina produced a brilliant intervention to keep out Kongolo's
shot on the line, although another quick break moments later ensured the
visitors wrapped up the points with eight minutes to spare.
The Sky Blues made promising advances down the right before Ambrose was
teed up on the edge of the box, keeping his composure to finish past
Collins. The home stopper then denied substitute Jorge Intima in the final
exchanges, with Tomori keeping out Celina's effort on the rebound, as we
went down to a defeat.

After the game, Adi Viveash admitted City's clinical finishing on the
night, coupled with an excellent individual performance from their
goalkeeper, proved the difference between the sides.
'There are a lot of positives we can take from the evening,' he said.
'We've played against a very good team with a number of younger players
and we did a lot of good things; we worked tremendously hard and defended
well as a group on the whole.
'You have to give credit to City because they were very clinical and their
goalkeeper has had a big night with three outstanding saves. They produced
moments of quality and hit us with a sucker-punch at the end that killed
the game.
'We had a big chance with Musonda at the back post while it was still 1-0
and if we scored there then I think we could have gone on to win the game
but we had to gamble at the end. It's another night of development for us
and now we have to quickly pick ourselves up for another game at the end
of the week.'
The Under-21s return to league action this Friday 30 October, with
Tottenham the visitors to Aldershot Town.
