http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/11/ under-21s-report--chelsea-v-sunderland.html Under-21s report: Chelsea 1 Sunderland 3 Mon 30 Nov 2015 Chelsea Under-21s went down to a home defeat at the hands of Under-21 Premier League leaders Sunderland at Cobham this afternoon (Monday). Tammy Abraham's penalty had cancelled out an opener from Ethan Robson, although two goals in 12 minutes in the second half ensured the visitors took all three points back home to the north-east. In between that quickfire double, Abraham had seen a second penalty kick saved by visiting keeper Adi Viveash made three changes from the side that beat Liverpool last time out as Alex Kiwomya, Kasey Palmer and Reece Mitchell all returned to the starting team. They comprised the supporting cast for striker Abraham in attack, with the striker having netted 13 goals in 14 appearances so far this season. Jamal Blackman kept his place in goal protected by an unchanged back four of Ola Aina, Fikayo Tomori, Dion Conroy and Jay Dasilva. Captain Charlie Colkett lined up alongside Charly Musonda in central midfield. The Blues started brightly on a breezy afternoon at the Cobham training ground, with Palmer confidently attempting an ambitious long-range drive that flew wide before poking just past the post following Mitchell's delivery from the left. The two combined again moments later as the wideman turned provider and Palmer controlled on his chest and scooped a shot towards goal all in one movement. Yet the effort lacked the power or accuracy to trouble Stryjek in the Black Cats goal. Sunderland had struggled to gather a foothold in the contest during the opening 15 minutes, though they were able to threaten and beat Blackman with practically their first foray forward. Rees Greenwood provided the threat as he danced past two defenders into the box before hesitating with his shot and allowing the ball to be blocked behind for a corner. The hosts switched off from the set-piece, allowing Ethan Robson the time and space to pick up the low delivery and slot the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner. The league leaders ought to have doubled their advantage within moments of the restart as Blackman misjudged an attempt to gather a low cross from the right and Nelson turned the ball back to Greenwood. However, with the goal gaping in front of him, the forward somehow managed to slice his effort wide. That profligacy was punished down the other end swiftly as Viveash's side levelled the game midway through the half. The referee spotted a handball in the box following Musonda's cross and did not hesitate to point to the spot, with Abraham stepping up to send the keeper the wrong way and bag his eighth league goal of the campaign. Chances continued to come down both ends as Abraham's effort deflected inches wide following an incisive break forward, before Stryjek denied Musonda with a flying save down to his right after the young Belgian had produced an exquisite volleyed attempt. Down the other end, Blackman smartly thwarted Nelson as the striker looked to get on the end of Martin Smith's clever slide-rule pass. Both managers took the opportunity of the interval to tighten their units at the back, with the second period restarting with far fewer opportunities at goal. The home side continued to enjoy the majority of possession, with first team captain John Terry watching on from the stands, though it took until the hour-mark for the next sight at goal to emerge. Substitute Miro Muheim first threatened with a dangerous cross from the left before firing narrowly wide. Just like in the first half, the encounter quickly sparked into life at the midway point and it was the visitors from the north-east celebrating as they took the lead for the second time after 70 minutes. A hopeful ball forward proved difficult to deal with for substitute Ali Suljic and Daniel Wright pounced to poke the loose ball into the back of the net. Almost immediately, Chelsea were handed a chance to level once again from the penalty spot as Musonda embarked on a mazy run forward straight from the kick-off. He was upended by the sprawling dive of the goalkeeper, however Stryjek was able to redeem himself instantly as he sprung to his left to push Abraham's effort behind. Our efforts to find a second leveller intensified with Musonda bringing a good high save from Stryjek with a swerving strike from almost 40 yards out before Abraham then tested the stopper from a narrow angle. However, with the Blues affording space to their opponents in behind as they pushed forward, Sunderland capitalised with a killer third goal as Carl Lawson supplied the pass for Smith to curl beyond Blackman and secure all three points for his side. == Reaction == After the game, Under-21s assistant Andy Myers reflected on an afternoon in which small mistakes had cost the team points once again. 'We had so much control of the game but just didn't have the answers to break down a very well-organised team,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'Our decision making in the final third was too predictable, always wanting to score the perfect goal and probably not using Tammy's presence as well as we could have. 'We had to chase the game at the end and get bodies forward; I don't mind that if we're creating plenty of chances but we weren't really doing that. We got hit with their third goal on the break but their other two were poorly defended by us. 'We have a few games coming up now, starting with Celtic in the International Cup at the end of the week, but first and foremost we have to eradicate the same little mistakes which are catching us out time and again this season.' The Under-21s return to action in the Premier League International Cup this Friday 4 December, with Celtic the visitors to Aldershot. Supporters can purchase tickets on the door priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and the game will also be screened live on Chelsea TV.
