https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/02/ under-21s-report--chelsea-v-norwich.html Under-21s report: Chelsea 5 Norwich City 0 Wed 17 Feb 2016 Chelsea Under-21s were comprehensive winners over Norwich City at Aldershot as they made it three wins from four in the Under-21 Premier League. The Blues raced into a 2-0 lead as goals from Reece Mitchell and Jordan Houghton put them in a commanding position after just 12 minutes, before second-half strikes from Kasey Palmer, Dion Conroy and Fikayo Tomori handed the hosts a well-deserved three points. There were two changes from the side that picked up a creditable point away at Sunderland last time out as Jamal Blackman started in goal for his second appearance of the season and Tomori replaced Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back. Tomori partnered Jake Clarke-Salter at the heart of the back four, with Jay Dasilva and Ola Aina at left-back and right-back respectively. Tammy Abraham continued to lead the line up front supported by Mitchell, Kasey Palmer and captain Fankaty Dabo, while Houghton partnered Kyle Scott in central midfield. In the driving rain and on a soggy pitch at Aldershot, the young Blues started in emphatic fashion as they stormed into a two-goal lead within the opening 12 minutes. The opener was carved out after four minutes as Abraham charged down goalkeeper Jake Kean's clearance and fed the loose ball back to Dabo, whose low cross was swept into the net by Mitchell. Benny Ashley-Seal spurned a good opportunity to swiftly level as he fired straight at Blackman following Michee Efete's delivery from the right before Abraham blazed over from close range after Palmer had turned provider. The game's lively opening was capped with a second goal moments later as the Canaries failed to clear a corner from the right and Houghton lashed the loose ball beyond Kean for his first Under-21 goal of the season. The hosts continued to control proceedings as Clarke-Salter's flicked header from Palmer's inswinging free-kick flew narrowly over, though Norwich ended the half with their strongest spell of the game. Ashley-Seal fired across the face of goal after accelerating away from Clarke-Salter and Glenn Middleton forced Blackman into gathering at the second attempt as Dmitri Halajko's side ended the half with some hope. That hope was quickly extinguished after the restart as the Blues returned for the second period determined to quickly settle the contest. Kean saved from Abraham after Scott's well-timed forward pass and Palmer was thwarted by a defender just as he was primed to shoot, yet it was 3-0 after 57 minutes and it was Palmer celebrating his 12th goal of the campaign. The 19-year-old midfielder won possession in midfielder, set Abraham charging forward and, when the striker's drive was tipped on to the post by the outstretched Kean, it was Palmer on hand to produce a neat left-foot finish to turn the ball into an unguarded net. Kean punched clear Abraham's fierce effort before Adi Viveash made a double switch after 67 minutes as Conroy and Charlie Wakefield entered the fray. The impact was instant as a substitute netted within a minute, though it was the unlikelier of the pair as Conroy strode forward from central defence and thumped a strike into the bottom far corner with conviction. All that was missing was a goal for Abraham, though Kean seemed determined to keep out the Chelsea number nine as he flung to his left to keep out another effort from the England Under-19s international. Kean was beaten again with eight minutes remaining with probably the pick of the lot as Palmer delivered a flat corner from the left and Tomori rifled a volley into the top corner. It was a finish and a goal that put the gloss on a big scoreline for the Blues as they returned to winning ways in the league. The next action for Viveash's side is a trip to St Mary's to take on Southampton on Monday 29 February. == Manager reaction == After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on a very pleasing evening for his side. 'It was an important game for us and a vital win,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'We played some good football, started the first half really well and obviously got the two goals but we needed to keep on the front foot and finish the game before half-time. We missed a couple of good chances and let them back into the game but we were pleased with how the players changed tactically in the second half to what we had asked for. We scored some good goals and now we can look up the table a little bit with the games in hand we have on most teams. 'Norwich came with a young side and they have a lot of players out on loan; their model is quite similar to ours in many ways and I applaud them for that because I definitely think it's the right approach. We wish them luck for the rest of the season because going to Carrow Road and playing in front of 10,000 people is an experience we look forward to every year and it would be disappointing to lose that if they go down.' The manager also touched on another side of development experienced by one of his defenders, Jake Clarke-Salter, who had travelled to Paris with the first team for the Champions League tie and only arrived back in the country in the early hours of the morning. 'It's a new experience for Jake and I think he did find that a bit difficult at times tonight but he has to understand that and adapt to it. We've had similar situations in the past with players like Andreas Christensen and it's important for the player to work out how to control mixing between the two groups. It's certainly all part of his development and another side to development that he's seen and experienced tonight.'
