Chelsea Under-21s snatched a late winner on the road in Manchester as
their 2015/16 campaign comes to a close this week.
A young side contested throughout at the Etihad Stadium but chances were
few and far between at both ends. The points were snatched with four
minutes remaining as substitute Charlie Colkett came off the bench to
steer a close-range finish into the back of the net. The youngsters
conclude their season with a trip to Leicester City this Thursday 12 May.
Adi Viveash made four changes from last week's narrow defeat at the hands
of Manchester United, with Fikayo Tomori, Charlie Colkett, Kasey Palmer
and Tammy Abraham all missing out. There was a switch in shape as well as
the visitors reverted to a 3-4-2-1, with Fankaty Dabo returning to captain
the team at the back alongside Dion Conroy and Ola Aina.
Bradley Collins continued in goal, with Charlie Wakefield and Jay Dasilva
operating at right wing-back and left wing-back respectively. Ruben Sammut
and Mukhtar Ali comprised the central midfield duo, with Isaac
Christie-Davies and Josimar Quintero starting in more advanced midfield
positions. Ike Ugbo led the line up front, making his first Under-21 start
of the season after netting 24 goals for the youth team this campaign.
The hosts settled the quicker of the two sides and forced early saves from
Collins through George Glendon and Sinan Bytyqi, the latter pushed behind
by the visiting goalkeeper for a corner. Sammut fashioned a sight at goal
for himself after regaining possession deep in the City half but lashed
his quickfire strike over the bar before Quintero teed him up with an even
better opportunity moments later.
The Ecuadorian's clever reverse pass found the run of Sammut but his
guided attempt into the corner gave Angus Gunn, the home goalkeeper, the
opportunity to push the ball behind. The visitors were growing stronger
as the half progressed and Gunn was again called in to action to stop
Ali's low shot following Christie-Davies's forward pass.
Dabo produced some excellent covering defending to prevent Bersant Celina
threatening the Chelsea goal while Brandon Barker fired narrowly wide of
the near post as the opening period ended goalless.
The second period began in stop-start fashion as a series of injury
stoppages disrupted the flow of the restart. Collins grasped Tosin
Adarabioyo's header following Celina's right-sided corner before Ali shot
ambitiously and wide from distance 20 minutes into the second half.
Bytyqi arrowed a strike narrowly wide from just inside the box at the end
of a rare flowing attack but it was left until the final 10 minutes for
this contest to be settled with key moments in both penalty boxes proving
crucial.
Collins produced the first crucial moment, instinctively throwing a strong
hand into the air to claw Bytyqi's fierce drive behind at his near post
after the forward had accelerated beyond substitute Josh Grant.
Yet it was fellow substitute Colkett who made the difference with 86
minutes on the clock. Christie-Davies advanced down the right and found
Ugbo in the six-yard box. Although the striker's contact was not enough to
trouble the keeper, he battled with Adarabioyo for the loose ball and
Colkett arrived right on cue to steer his right-footed finish beyond Gunn
and into the corner.
The win keeps Viveash's side in fifth place in the league table. Victory
at the King Power Stadium later this week will see them end the campaign
in fourth place, leapfrogging City in the final standings.
