Our development squad went down to a London derby defeat this afternoon
(Friday) against an Arsenal side featuring Danny Welbeck and Carl
Jenkinson.
The hosts led 2-0 at the break after goals from Rob Holding and Donyell
Malen before Reiss Nelson extended the advantage 17 minutes after the
restart. Ike Ugbo reduced the deficit with a smart finish on the rebound
after Charly Musonda's swerving shot was parried, though Welbeck's
converted penalty restored the Gunners' three-goal lead and sealed the
three points.
Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that faced Manchester City at
Aldershot six days previously, with Bradley Collins missing out through
illness and Charlie Wakefield absent due to injury. Jared Thompson came
into the team in goal protected by a back three of Trevoh Chalobah,
Richard Nartey and Ola Aina.
Todd Kane continued his comeback from a serious knee injury by lining up
at right wing-back, with Dujon Sterling on the opposite flank and Ruben
Sammut partnering Josimar Quintero in central midfield. Mason Mount and
Musonda supported Ugbo in attack. Meanwhile, Arsenal fielded several
players with first-team experience, including England international
striker Welbeck, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Holding and Jenkinson.
Despite the scoreline, the contest was evenly-matched for long periods at
Arsenal's London Colney training ground. Musonda had the afternoon's first
attempt, firing a free-kick straight into the wall from 20 yards out,
before Mount had the ball in the back of the net after a lovely move but
was denied by the offside flag.
Musonda spurned a good opportunity after 15 minutes, firing high over the
crossbar having been teed up by Kane from the right and Arsenal grew
stronger following our bright start. Maitland-Niles shot low and wide
after neat skill from Malen fashioned the chance but the Blues defence
failed to heed the warning signs and were behind moments later.
The ball was lofted hopefully into the box following a short corner
routine on the left and centre-back Holding was on hand to capitalise on
some disappointing defending to head in the opener from close range.
Mount fired over as the visitors struggled to test Emiliano Martinez in
the Gunners goal, though the keeper's work was aided after half-hour by a
particularly impressive block by Jenkinson from Aina's powerful strike at
the back post.
While perhaps only half a chance, Viveash's side were left to regret their
lack of potency up front and fell 2-0 behind 10 minutes before the break.
In truth, it was another soft goal to concede as Arsenal broke quickly
forward and Malen's shot from the right squirmed underneath Thompson and
into the back of the net.
Chances continued to be fashioned down both ends as Sterling cleared well
from Malen, Aina fired wide from distance and Mount dragged a left-foot
strike beyond the far post after beating two defenders on his route into
the box.
Despite the two-goal deficit, there remained a sense that we could find a
way back into the contest in the second period and our restart was bright
as Kane struck a volley into the ground and wide of the far post. Down the
other end, Nelson shot straight at Thompson from the edge of the box
before Mount forced Martinez into his most testing work of the afternoon.
Quintero did well to steal possession in midfield and release Sterling
down the left, whose cutback found Mount just inside the 18-yard box. The
midfielder steadied himself and steered a low effort towards the bottom
left corner, denied by a strong hand from the tall goalkeeper who got down
well.
It was a moment that the Blues would look back on as significant when
Arsenal made it 3-0 after an hour. Progress was made down the right flank
and Malen's delivery was turned past Thompson courtesy of an improvised
back-heel finish from Nelson.
Hope was briefly reignited as Ugbo netted his 14th goal of the season with
22 minutes remaining. Musonda caused problems with his direct running at
the heart of the defence and his swerving strike was spilled by Martinez
into the path of the striker, who fired the ball into an unguarded net.
However, Arsenal restored their three-goal lead and effectively sealed the
points with a fourth goal a few minutes later. Sammut was caught out by a
clever touch from Malen and the Scotland Under-21 international was
penalised for pulling on the shirt of the Dutch forward. The referee
pointed to the spot, brandished a yellow card to the Blues skipper and
Welbeck finished emphatically from 12 yards.
It was a goal that made the points safe but failed to dampen the attacking
instincts of Viveash's side, who continued to push forward in the final 15
minutes. Musonda ought to have done better after robbing Sheaf of
possession, his heavy touch allowing Martinez the opportunity to smother
the ball at his feet, before Sterling shot wide late on.
Ultimately, it was a disappointing result for the visitors but a
productive afternoon in development terms for a young group, who remain
fourth in the league.
