Under-18s report: West Ham 0 Chelsea 3
Sat 25 Feb 2017
Our youth team rounded off the regional section of the Under-18 Premier
League in style, scoring three without reply to take the aggregate score
in their last four league outings to 21-0.
A penalty decision early in the second half proved decisive as Luke
McCormick converted from 12 yards to send us on our way to victory, before
further goals from Tariq Uwakwe and Cole Dasilva completed the scoring.
The result takes Jody Morris's side to 22 matches unbeaten in all
competitions as they prepare for the seven-game elite play-off round next
month.
With the south section title secured some weeks previously and a massive
13-0 win recorded last Saturday, there may have been a temptation for this
Blues side to ease on the handbrake ahead of more challenging tests ahead.
However, in blustery and cold conditions in east London, the visitors were
prepared to run, tackle and roll up their sleeves for a London derby fight.
Morris made four changes from the Brighton rout with Jamie Cumming, Jon
Panzo, Reece James and George McEachran returning to the side, yet it took
some time for the contest to get going as both teams struggled to build
momentum in the early stages.
St Clair was handed the most promising opportunity of the opening 15
minutes, spinning into space at the back post to get on the end of
Uwakwe's inswinging free-kick, though the Scottish youth international was
unable to test home goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics with his header.
Dasilva fired a low cross too close to Matrevics following a wonderful
pass out to the right by Gallagher before the Blues were required to
demonstrate just why they had notched up nine clean sheets in 10 matches
coming into this contest. James read the danger well before poking the
ball away from the advancing Korrey Henry midway through the half, while
Jeremy Ngakia spurned a decent sight at goal when he sliced a shot
harmlessly wide of the near post from the right.
It took 32 minutes before either goalkeeper was tested, McCormick finding
Castillo with an inviting diagonal pass and the Dutchman controlling the
ball confidently on his chest before striking towards goal. His contact
was decent but Matrevics was able to get in the way and push the ball
behind for a corner, from which Panzo's header was blocked by a covering
defender.
Dasilva saw a shot blocked as the Blues grew brighter before Uwakwe headed
over the bar after good work down the left and a cross from St Clair stood
up to the far post for the midfielder to attack with a run from deep.
The Hammers continued to pose a threat of their own and Gallagher covered
impressively to thwart Henry's progress after the forward had skipped past
Panzo and McCormick, heading infield from the right flank. The scores were
level at the interval but it didn't take long for the breakthrough to
arrive once the referee had restarted play in the second period.
A nice passage of play saw McEachran released into the box and he went
down under the challenge of Reece Hannam. McCormick netted a hat-trick
last Saturday, including a brace of penalties, and duly repeated the trick
of converting from the spot to hand Morris's side the advantage.
The lead was doubled a quarter of an hour later but West Ham ought to have
equalised before then. Dangerously advancing down the right flank,
substitute Yiannis Constantinou escaped the attention of Dasilva and
delivered a perfect centre for Jahmal Hector-Ingram, who failed to test
Cumming and skewed his shot wide from a really promising position.
A ruthless streak has been evident in this young Chelsea side throughout
the campaign and they dented the hopes of the Hammers just after the hour
mark. It was a wonderful goal fashioned from practically nothing as
McEachran did well to win an aerial duel in midfield and Uwakwe sensed a
chance to catch out Matrevics, waiting for the ball to drop and bounce up
before lobbing the ball perfectly over the head of the stranded goalkeeper
and into the back of the net.
It should have been 2-0 moments later as Guehi's header from a left-sided
corner somehow stayed out before substitute Martell Taylor-Crossdale shot
straight at Matrevics from a good position as he strived to add to his
league-high 19 goals.
There was a third goal in the game with 20 minutes remaining and it was
the Blues celebrating once again. McEachran turned provider and Dasilva
provided a neat finish at the end of a flowing move he had started in his
own half.
Taylor-Crossdale might have bagged his 20th of the season before time was
up, striking inches wide of the near post after excellent work down the
left flank by Castillo, though it mattered little once the referee's
whistle signalled full-time. The young Blues had won again, their eighth
straight success in all competitions, their 10th clean sheet in 11 and
their 16th win in 22 league games this season. With March bringing the
elite play-off round and an FA Youth Cup semi-final tie, Morris's side
once again head into the business end of the campaign hunting silverware
on two fronts.
