Under-18s report: Chelsea 3 Reading 0
Fri 12 May 2017
Our youth team are league and cup champions for the first time since 1961
after victory at Cobham saw them finish as winners of the Under-18 Premier
League elite round.
With the FA Youth Cup and league southern section title already safely in
the trophy cabinet, Jody Morris and his youngsters completed a remarkable
Treble as second half goals from Conor Gallagher, Harvey St Clair and
Mason Mount gave the Blues three points that secure a title victory.
Morris made three changes from Tuesday's crucial win over Arsenal as
goalkeeper Jamie Cumming returned between the sticks and Josh Grant
replaced the injured Reece James in the back three. Trevoh Chalobah and
Joseph Colley comprised an otherwise unchanged defence, while Luke
McCormick came into the team to partner Gallagher in central midfield.
Cole Dasilva and Dujon Sterling had combined to net against the Gunners
earlier in the week and the duo continued in their wing-back roles in
Morris's 3-4-3 system. Ike Ugbo led the attack supported by skipper Mount
and Jacob Maddox.
No visiting side has beaten the youth team at Cobham since April 2015 and
only Aston Villa have caused the young Blues to drop home points all
season but the hosts knew they had to win or else hand the title race
advantage back to Arsenal. Cumming made a comfortable low stop from Jack
Nolan early on, while Maddox lacked the finish down the other end after a
brilliant floated pass from Mount.
The Surrey evening sunshine gave the contest an end-of-season feel but
Reading were determined to finish their own campaign with a positive
display and they competed throughout the opening exchanges. Teddy Howe
advanced dangerously infield from right-back but his final shot was tame
before Grant made a well-timed challenge in the box to thwart the progress
of Shamar Moore.
Our passing lacked its usual crisp and precise nature but it was one
simple kick over the top from Cumming that presented the clearest early
chance. The keeper caught the visitors completely cold and set Ugbo racing
clear in behind but the striker spurned the chance and rolled his effort
wide of the left upright.
Slowly but surely, Morris's men began to exert more authority on the game
as they pressed for the ball with more urgency. Maddox saw a shot blocked
after stealing possession from the Royals on halfway and Dasilva dragged
an effort wide from 25 yards out following a short corner as the half-time
break approached.
Mount and Gallagher both gave Liam Driscoll, the Reading keeper, cause for
concern before the interval. The captain's curling strike just lacked the
final bend to take it into the far corner while Gallagher, our Academy
Scholar of the Year for 2016/17, struck across goal but was denied by a
smart stop.
The Blues restarted with a swap up front as Martell Taylor-Crossdale
replaced Ugbo and the 17-year-old was joined by Sterling as Morris
continued with his switch to 4-diamond-2, adopted late in the first
period. However, it was Reading who went close to breaking the deadlock
four minutes after the restart. A corner from the left found its way into
a crowded six-yard box and Cumming was forced to produce a brilliant
reaction save to push a powerful header over.
It felt like a big moment in the game and, within eight minutes, we were
in front. Mount had seen a strike saved, while Maddox and McCormick fired
over, before Gallagher found the back of the net. It was fashioned with a
move of patience and craft, Taylor-Crossdale pulling the ball back from
the right into the path of the midfielder and Gallagher sweeping the ball
into the far corner.
Cue an outburst of celebration and relief at Cobham, albeit short-lived.
The visitors threatened an immediate leveller and Cumming was impressive
once again, springing from his line to deny Joel Rollinson from close
range.
St Clair was introduced as we switched to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 and any
lingering nerves were banished with two further Chelsea goals in five
minutes. The Royals were architects of their own downfall as sloppy play
around their own six-yard box gifted McCormick a sight at goal. His effort
was palmed away by Driscoll but only into the path of St Clair, who turned
the loose ball in for his eighth goal of the season.
It was 3-0 shortly afterwards as another recent arrival to proceedings
made a key contribution. Under-16 schoolboy Tariq Lamptey was introduced
down the right flank and provided a useful injection of pace and vibrancy.
He picked up the ball on the wing and accelerated past the full-back with
a great first touch before delivering a perfect cross for Mount to poke in.
The final 15 minutes were merely the wait before the party could begin.
The victory was our 22nd from 29 games in all Under-18 competitions this
season and the trophy the third our youngsters have lifted at the end of
an incredibly successful campaign. The referee's final whistle signalled a
win over the Royals and ensured our title coronation could begin.

Under-18s reaction: Trophies and teamwork
Sat 13 May 2017
As the party at the Hawthorns continued long into the Midlands night,
there was a similar, albeit more age-appropriate, celebration taking place
at Cobham as our Under-18s were crowned national league champions.
Jody Morris's young Blues needed a win against Reading to add the league
title to the regional division and FA Youth Cup already returned to the
Academy trophy cabinet. The job was far from straightforward but second
half strikes from Conor Gallagher, Harvey St Clair and Mason Mount, a trio
of players who have been at the club since the Under-8 age group, secured
the victory and the title.
It means our youngsters are league and cup champions for the first time
since 1961 and completes a Treble of trophy triumphs this term, an
impressive feat even for an age group so accustomed to success. After the
game, Morris reflected on a challenging contest at Cobham and a remarkable
season for his young charges.
'It's been an amazing season for us,' he told the official Chelsea
website. 'We've broken records and won every competition we've entered so
I couldn't be prouder of the lads. It was nervy in the game really until
we scored and Jamie Cumming has had to do his bit in goal with a couple of
important saves but that's the sign of a top keeper. Once the first goal
went in we looked in total control.'
The manager believes his group have combined winning trophies with the
development that is just as significant when working with teenage
players. His side have demonstrated a relentless work ethic all season and
have numerous strings to their bow, an important characteristic for any
high-performing team.
'I think they've all improved individually but also, as a team, we've
shown some real improvements, especially off the ball,' he continued.
'We've been tough to play against whether we're pressing from the front,
matching teams physically or dominating with our technical ability. We've
shown so many different styles to our play throughout the season.
'We've had to dig deep in these last few games of the merit league, going
down to 10 men against Blackburn and coming from behind, getting big wins
away from home against top teams, like at Liverpool just a few days after
winning the Youth Cup. That mentality has been our biggest attribute
throughout the year and it's carried us through certain situations.'
While keen for his players to take the plaudits, this has been an
incredible debut season for our former midfielder, taking charge of a team
as lead coach for the first time. The Blues have dropped just two points
at home all season and remain unbeaten at Cobham since April 2015. They
have scored 115 goals in all competitions, won 13-0 against Brighton back
in February but have also kept 18 clean sheets and achieved it all with a
style that ensures they are always an entertaining watch.
However, Morris was quick to pay tribute to the collective efforts behind
the achievement.
'I'm privileged to be working with this group of players,' he went on.
'We've had some unbelievable teams and players in our Academy over the
years but these boys will go down in history because this season is the
best any Chelsea youth team have ever produced.
'It's a huge team effort, not just the players and staff involved in the
Under-18s group this season but for everyone who works in our Academy. The
majority of this team have come through our programme since the age of
seven so this is a really proud moment for everyone. There are pictures on
the wall of them as Under-8s and now they're completing a Treble-winning
season for the Under-18s. It's an amazing achievement.'
