Internationals: Winning beginning for young Lions
Thu 4 May 2017
England opened their tournament campaign at the Under-17 European
Championships in Croatia with a 3-1 victory over Norway.
All four of our young Lions started as Steve Cooper's side continued their
impressive season, in which they have won all but one of their 15 matches
played to date. The Norwegians, managed by our former defender Erland
Johnsen, took an early lead but England responded with two goals before
the break from Rhian Brewster.
The second of those goals came five minutes before the half-time break and
was assisted by our schoolboy forward Callum Hudson-Odoi. As in the FA
Youth Cup final, the 16-year-old was the youngest player on the field and
impressed with his pace and direct running in the final third.
Jon Panzo and Marc Guehi partnered each other in central defence, the
latter as captain, while George McEachran lined up in midfield. Guehi was
credited with an unfortunate own goal for Norway's opener, a dangerous
corner diverting off the defender and into the back of the net. However,
Brewster's brace and a strike form Man City's Phil Foden two minutes from
time sealed three group points that leaves the youngsters top of Group D
after the first round of matches.
Earlier in the day, Netherlands claimed a narrow victory over Ukraine
courtesy of a late winner. Juan Castillo was introduced in the second half
for the Dutchmen, who join England on three points in Group D. The two
sides will meet in the final group game on Monday. Before then, England
face Ukraine and the Netherlands meet Norway this Sunday 7 May.

Internationals: England U17s through to quarter-finals
Sun 7 May 2017
Four of our youngsters featured throughout as England booked a place in
the quarter-finals at the European Under-17 Championship finals.
George McEachran opened the scoring against Ukraine in the 20th minute
with a smart finish into the bottom corner and the young Lions added
further goals through Rhian Brewster, Jadon Sancho and Aidan Barlow.
McEachran started in midfield as manager Steve Cooper named an unchanged
side from their 3-1 victory against Norway in the group opener. Jon Panzo
continued to partner captain Marc Guehi in central defence, while Callum
Hudson-Odoi lined up alongside Brewster and Sancho in attack. All four
Chelsea representatives played the full 90 minutes in Croatia.
The win puts England on six points in Group D and assures them of a place
in the quarter-finals ahead of the final group game against Netherlands on
Wednesday. The youngsters have not progressed beyond the last-eight since
winning the tournament in 2014.
Juan Castillo also played in the other Group D game, a 2-2 draw for the
Netherlands against Norway. It leaves the Dutch second in the group with
four points from their opening two matches.

Internationals: England through to U17 semis
Sat 13 May 2017
Four of our Academy youngsters helped England reach the semi-finals at the
Under-17 European Championship following a narrow victory over the
Republic of Ireland.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, George McEachran, Jon Panzo and Marc Guehi all started
in an unchanged young Lions line-up, the latter as captain. Jadon Sancho's
early opener was the difference between the sides in Croatia as Steve
Cooper's men advanced to the last four, where they will meet Turkey.
Victory also assured the youngsters of a place at the Under-17 World Cup,
to be held in India in October.
The Blues quartet featured throughout, as they have done in all four games
at the tournament. They are aiming to help England replicate the
tournament win of 2014, in which Dominic Solanke and Izzy Brown featured
prominently. McEachran and Hudson-Odoi have a goal each at the finals. The
semi-finals take place next Tuesday 16 May.
Later in the evening, a fifth Academy representative was in action but it
was disappointment for Juan Castillo and the Netherlands as they were
beaten 2-1 by Germany courtesy of a late goal. Our teenage Dutchman played
the duration of the contest and assisted the opener on the stroke of
half-time with a brilliant delivery. However, the result went against
Holland and the Germans progress to a semi-final date with Spain.

internationals--five-head-for-toulon-as-young-lions-reach-final.html
Internationals: England U17s reach final
Tue 16 May 2017
England's youngsters booked a place in the Under-17 European Championship
final for the fourth time in 11 years as our schoolboy forward Callum
Hudson-Odoi netted in a last-four win against Turkey.
Steve Cooper's side have won every game played so far in the competition,
six in qualification and five at the tournament, and will face either
Germany or Spain in the final on Friday looking for victory in a
competition they won in 2010 and 2014. The young Lions were unchanged once
again for their semi-final in Croatia this evening (Tuesday), which meant
starts for our quartet of Academy representatives.
Hudson-Odoi lined up in a front three alongside FA Youth Cup final
opponent Jadon Sancho and former Academy striker Rhian Brewster, while
Marc Guehi captained the team in central defence alongside Jon Panzo and
George McEachran continued in midfield.
It took just 11 minutes for England to break the deadlock as Hudson-Odoi
celebrated his second goal at the tournament, latching on to a pass from
Sancho before sweeping his finish confidently into the corner of the net.
The 16-year-old narrowly blazed over later in the first half before Sancho
added a second with another composed finish in front of goal.
Turkey reduced the arrears just before half-time and made the second
period a much more balanced contest. McEachran went close with a curling
effort after the restart as the young Lions held firm to protect their
lead and advance to the final.
While the domestic football season prepares to conclude, it looks set to
be a busy summer for England's youth teams. The Under-21s will be
competing at the European Championships for their age group in Poland next
month, while the Under-19s travel to Georgia in July for their finals.
Before then, there is involvement at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the
Toulon Tournament.
The England squad for the latter was announced earlier today and features
four of this term's Youth Cup-winning side. Reece James, Tariq Uwakwe,
Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Ike Ugbo will travel to the south of France
as a mixed age group England side look to defend the title they won last
year. They will meet Angola, Cuba and Japan in the group stage, which
begins at the end of the month. Cole Dasilva has also received a call-up
for Wales Under-20s.

Internationals: Penalty heartbreak for England U17s
Fri 19 May 2017
England Under-17s suffered penalty shootout heartbreak in the final of the
European Under-17 Championship.
All four of our Academy representatives started in Croatia, as they have
done in all six games at the finals. Jon Panzo partnered captain Marc
Guehi in the centre of defence, while George McEachran and Callum
Hudson-Odoi lined up further up the field.
As in the semi-final, Hudson-Odoi netted the opener in the first half, a
deflected curling effort from just inside the 18-yard box at the end of a
mazy run that took his tournament tally to three goals. While the
Spaniards levelled moments before the interval with an incisive move,
Steve Cooper's side looked to have won it with a goal from another FA
Youth Cup final scorer, Manchester City's Phil Foden.
It remained 2-1 until deep into stoppage time but a late header from Nacho
Diaz second before the full-time whistle sent the contest to a spot-kick
decider. The new 'ABBA' penalty shootout system has been trialled at the
tournament but England missed their second and third efforts from 12
yards, with Spain running out 4-1 shootout winners and lifting the trophy
for the third time.
As one tournament ends, another begins for England with the FIFA Under-20
World Cup in South Korea getting underway tomorrow (Saturday). Paul
Williams's side take on Argentina in their group opener and Jake
Clarke-Salter, Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Solanke will all be hoping to
feature.

internationals--trio-start-in-u20-world-cup-win.html
Internationals: Trio start in U20 World Cup win
Sat 20 May 2017
Three of our youngsters started for England as they got their FIFA
Under-20 World Cup campaign off to a great start with victory over
Argentina.
Jake Clarke-Salter and Fikayo Tomori lined up in the heart of defence for
Paul Simpson's side, while Dominic Solanke featured in attack as the young
Lions won their first game at the tournament for 20 years, ending a run of
17 matches without a win. All three played for the duration of the 90
minutes.
Argentina started brightly in South Korea and enjoyed much of the early
possession, forcing England to defend with both commitment and
intelligence. The opening goal arrived 10 minutes before half-time as
Everton pair Kieran Dowell and Dominic Calvert-Lewin combined, the latter
finding the net with a brilliant diving header.
A second goal early after the restart gave England's youngsters a cushion,
Newcastle's Adam Armstrong with a composed finish to double the lead,
before Tomori was involved in a notable incident as the Video Assistant
Referee (VAR) intervened in a major tournament for the first time.
Our defender, on loan at Championship runners-up Brighton this season, was
the victim of a flailing elbow from Lautaro Martinez and, after
consultation with the VAR on the touchline, the referee ultimately
brandished the red card.
The numerical disadvantage made hopes of a comeback far-fetched for the
Argentinians and their misery was compounded in stoppage time as
Calvert-Lewin was fouled for a penalty. Solanke stepped up and calmed
slotted the spot-kick into the bottom right corner to seal the three
points in Group A. England will next face Guinea on Tuesday 23 May before
the group finale against the hosts next Friday. The top two plus the four
best-ranked third-place teams in each group advance to the last-16.
The World Cup is the latest tournament in a busy summer for the England
youth age groups and Chelsea involvement is widespread throughout the
different teams. The Toulon Tournament gets underway later in the month
and Josh Grant has been called up as an injury replacement to join the
Blues quartet of Reece James, Tariq Uwakwe, Martell Taylor-Crossdale and
Ike Ugbo.
With our new development squad coach Joe Edwards part of the England
backroom team, there will be a strong Chelsea representation in the south
of France as England look to defend the trophy they won last year. Ruben
Sammut and Cole Dasilva will also be involved for Scotland and Wales
respectively.

Internationals: Young Lions close to last-16
Tue 23 May 2017
England's youngsters moved a step closer to the knockout round at the FIFA
Under-20 World Cup following a 1-1 draw against Guinea in which three
Chelsea players started.
Following a 3-0 win over Argentina to open their Group A campaign at the
weekend, Paul Simpson's side now sit on four points and will advance to
the last-16 if they can pick up a point over hosts South Korea on Friday.
Fikayo Tomori, Jake Clarke-Salter and Dominic Solanke all featured
throughout the 90 minutes in Jeonju, the latter going close to breaking
the deadlock with a header in the early stages. Bournemouth's Lewis Cook
made it 1-0 after the restart with a brilliant strike from distance before
an unfortunate own goal from Tomori, the 19-year-old placing too much
weight on a pass back to goalkeeper Dean Henderson from near the halfway
line.
The result means the young Lions will top the group with victory against
South Korea later in the week. Their previous first-placed group finish at
the tournament was back in 1997 when Jody Morris, then a Blues youngster
and now our Under-18s coach, was in the squad.

Internationals: England youngsters top World Cup group
Fri 26 May 2017
England's youngsters are through to the last-16 at the Under-20 World Cup
after beating the hosts South Korea and claiming top spot in Group A.
After starting the previous two group encounters, both Jake Clarke-Salter
and Dominic Solanke were rested to the bench for a game in which the young
Lions needed just a point to secure their advance into the knockout round.
Fikayo Tomori kept his place in central defence as Paul Simpson's side
recorded a second clean sheet from three and a 1-0 win courtesy of a
second-half goal from Everton's Kieran Dowell.
Solanke was introduced midway through an intense first period but it
wasn't until 11 minutes after the restart that England found the
breakthrough, Dowell finishing from his club teammate Jonjoe Kenny's
delivery.
Kenny later cleared off the line as the youngsters rode their luck but
eventually claimed the three points that ensures a group-topping finish at
the tournament for the first time in 20 years. It also means they will
face one of four best-ranked third-place teams in the last-16 as they bid
to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1993, when Ian Pearce
and Andy Myers represented the Blues in Tunisia. The knockout tie will
take place next Wednesday 31 May.
