https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2022/02/24/ fa-youth-cup-report--chelsea-blackpool FA Youth Cup report: Chelsea 3 Blackpool 2 24 Feb 2022 Ed Brand's boys have made it through to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over a spirited Blackpool side. Harvey Vale scored the pick of the bunch with a delightful left-footed shot which found the top corner of the net. https://i.imgur.com/3IcGmDr.jpg Our young Blues were properly tested in this one as they went a goal down to Jake Daniels in the opening moments of the game. We responded well as Vale's long-range effort gave the keeper no chance as it found the top corner of the net. Malik Mothersille added another goal to his tally in this competition on the stroke of half-time to give us the lead. We were pegged back momentarily after a Luke Badley-Morgan own goal. However, we were only behind for a short while though as after Derrick Abu won us a penalty, Charlie Webster sent the keeper the wrong way to secure the win for us. There was a late change to the line-up as Silko Thomas was drafted in to play after Jude Soonsup-Bell pulled up in the warm-up and after his impact off the bench against Liverpool in the last round, it was no surprise to see his inclusion https://i.imgur.com/zrSYFG4.jpg Silko Thomas was drafted into the line-up after an injury to Soonsup-Bell == Frantic start == We almost took the lead with our first attack inside the first minute as a Derrick Abu cross into the box agonisingly missed the toe of Silko Thomas who was at the back post stretching for it. https://i.imgur.com/4M8wEBV.jpg Derrick Abu's cross almost found Silko Thomas at the back post Despite this fast start, in yet another fixture our young Blues went behind first as a fast counter-attack, led by Arnold Matshazi, was finished finely over Prince Adegoke by Jake Daniels giving the Tangerines the lead. The intentions of the away side were clear, as we were controlling the possession, Blackpool were content with counter-attacking. They had another sight of goal which, but for a last-ditch challenge by Brodie Hughes, could have resulted in a second. == Strong response == As we settled into the game, cue Vale who cut in nicely to beat his man and arrow a lovely left-footed shot into the top corner of the net. A brilliant equaliser for our boys and Vale's third goal in the competition this season. https://i.imgur.com/xnSwJzU.jpg Harvey Vale scored a stunning goal to level the scoring We were firmly in control of this tie and Vale linked up with Abu again as the right-back was developing a threatening relationship on the right with the goal-scorer. His wicked delivery almost led to a second for Chelsea with an attempted clearance ricocheting off a Blackpool defender over their keeper's goal. Another opportunity presented itself from the right side again as Vale, who was in the thick off the action, rolled a pass over to Thomas who on the stretch diverted his effort wide. If Thomas was not off balance, then it surely would have resulted in a second goal for us. We were getting closer, and Webster was next to test the gloves of keeper Alan Machlachlan as his low effort in the box was tipped away. Against the run of play though, the Lancashire-based side did show the threat that they can pose as a Joe Strawn shot almost caught Adegoke off guard, but he did well to palm and then recover. == Commanding position == That scare led us to our deserved second of the game and it came from our right side again. Abu did excellently well to beat his man and deliver a wonderful cross to Mothersille whose header was saved brilliantly by Machlachlan. He saved the follow up effort and he thought he saved the third till the assistant flagged to signal that Mothersille had indeed scored. https://i.imgur.com/iNUS5QV.jpg Malik Mothersille after three attempts in succession was able to score our second of the game There was enough time for another chance before half-time as Mothersille played in Ronnie Stutter after a surging run and his effort was saved well. == Pegged back == Though the second half started quietly, Matshazi was played through on goal, but his shot was blocked well by the recovering Hughes. We did not learn from that warning in the opening moments of the half and Luke Mariette surged into the area and his cross was turned into the net by Badley-Morgan for an own goal. == Lead restored == Again, we increased the pressure on the visitors after being pegged back and that combination Vale and Abu were the answer to the third goal as after a lovely one-two Abu was in on goal but was fouled recklessly by Will Squires. Webster stepped up to convert the penalty and give us the lead again. https://i.imgur.com/mKg9M1G.jpg Charlie Webster with what turned out to be the winner from the spot We were reminded once again of the threat of Blackpool and Strawn found himself in on goal in the area, but Adegoke spread himself big to make the save. Adegoke was called into action again as he made a fantastic save after a Daniels effort was destined for the goal. Our boys saw out the game excellently with good possession. There was indeed time for Jack Moore to be sent-off after a second yellow after he fouled Webster while we were on the counter. An all-round good display after a tough test from a side who caused an upset in the last round against the academy from Premier League Newcastle, as Webster's penalty turned out to be the winner in this one. A semi-final clash against either Blackburn Rovers or Nottingham Forest away awaits Ed's team. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2022/02/25/ fa-youth-cup-reaction--ed-brand---obviously-delighted-but-we-nee Youth Cup highlights and reaction: Brand and Vale on room for improvement in the semi-finals 25 Feb 2022 After booking our place in the FA Youth Cup last four, Under-18s boss Ed Brand and goalscorer Harvey Vale reflected on where things can improve in the semi-finals... https://i.imgur.com/GLSLpNm.jpg The duo were speaking after our 3-2 victory over Blackpool in the sixth round at Stamford Bridge, a game that turned this way and that before Charlie Webster's penalty eventally separated the sides. Earlier in the evening, a brilliant strike from Vale had levelled the scores and Malik Mothersille's close-range finish made it 2-1 before the Tangerines fought back again. Chelsea will travel to Blackburn Rovers or Nottingham Forest in the next round, though Brand believes his players must step up if our aspirations to lift the trophy once again are to be realised. 'We're obviously delighted with the result and to be into the semi-finals of the Youth Cup but in terms of the performance, I'm not so pleased on the whole,' he admitted. https://i.imgur.com/cZ5SAww.jpg Lewis Hall in action for our youngsters against Blackpool 'I thought there were moments in the first half where we played quite well and played some good stuff but I always thought there were moments where we fell into the trap of being too slow with the ball, not being courageous enough with it, not trying to do the things we spoke about.' He went on to add that 'when we did shift it those were the times where we played our good stuff and looked like we could get in every time we did it. We just didn't do it consistently enough at the speed and tempo that we're capable of.' However, Brand did have some positives to draw out from the game and was especially full of praise for goalkeeper Prince Adegoke's performance, which included two important saves late on to keep our one-goal advantage intact. 'Prince has had some difficult moments recently but I am delighted for him to make some big saves and help his team because he's such a big character within the group and a lovely kid,' added the head coach. 'That was a great moment for him to have a good game at Stamford Bridge and it will do his confidence the world of good. https://i.imgur.com/frS55EJ.jpg Prince Adegoke had a fine game against Blackpool pulling off a number of key saves 'Overall, I am pleased to get through and obviously we had to come from behind initially to get ourselves back in front, suffered the setback of being level and then going again, so the group showed that they've got that resilience and character which is good. 'We just need to make sure we perform a lot better in the semi-final because whoever we face, it will be an incredibly difficult game and we have to perform better than we did tonight.' Brand was also impressed with Vale's performance, which was capped off with a fantastic strike, with the young winger admitting that Hakim Ziyech's recent goal against Tottenham played a part in his decision to shoot from distance. The effort bore plenty of resemblance to that strike from the Moroccan, arrowed into the top corner from the edge of the box in front of the Matthew Harding Stand. https://i.imgur.com/zNNinVD.jpg Vale curled us level with a brilliant strike reminiscent of Ziyech's recent goal against Spurs 'It was probably one of my sweetest strikes,' claimed Vale. 'I saw Hakim's goal against Tottenham a few weeks ago and when you're a left-footed player playing on the right and cutting in, it opens up for you. My eyes lit up and as soon as I hit it, I felt it was going in.' With defender Alfie Gilchrist absent, Vale stepped in as captain and he spoke about how that makes him feel, as well as what he is expecting in the semi-finals. 'I'm one of the senior players and was the captain tonight so I feel that responsibility but all of us feel it,' added the 18-year-old. 'We're a team and a unit so if everyone plays their part, I feel like we're a good working team.' In terms of the semi-final tie, he said: 'It will be a big fixture, especially playing away. Both their sets of fans are normally class in first team games so it's going to be a tough fixture. We can't look past that but we're excited for it and we're ready. We're going to work on the pitch and hopefully get the win there as well.' The team will now have to wait to see who they will play in the last four, with Rovers and the Reds going head-to-head next Thursday at Ewood Park. Before then, our youth team are back in action this weekend with a home league fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday.
