Saul, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku were all on target for the Blues and all impressed, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek was another Chelsea player to earn rave reviews as our stats below highlight… == Slow start == After the news just before kick-off that Roman Abramovich announced he would look to sell the club, the last thing Chelsea needed was a fast start from our Championship hosts. That's what happened, however, with Luton heading home through Reece Burke inside the opening two minutes, with a cup shock on the agenda at that point. https://i.imgur.com/6gbyBaD.jpg The Blues went behind early against the Hatters It was uncharacteristic of Tuhel's Blues and was, in fact, the quickest goal we had conceded this season in all competitions. == Saul shines == It may have taken longer than he would have liked, but Saul opened his Chelsea account with a tidy finish to cap off an excellent performance in the centre of midfield. The Spaniard latched onto the ball on the edge of the area, after Werner had worked it into his path, and nonchalantly guided the ball past Harry Isted and into the far corner. It came at an important time for the Blues, with a partisan home crowd roaring Luton on, as Saul's strike did just enough to quieten down the atmosphere and allowed us to settle into the game more. https://i.imgur.com/fkiGb1k.jpg Saul impressed in midfield Saul was at the heart of everything Chelsea did, registering a game-high six shots of which four were on target including his goal. He was tidy in possession and recorded one key pass in an impressive outing. == Ruben dominates in new role == While Saul was in charge in midfield, there was a new role for another of our midfielders in Loftus-Cheek. Ruben started in an unfamiliar position of centre-back, flanked either side by Toni Rudiger and Malang Sarr. It may not be where we are used to seeing the Cobham graduate, but he took it in his stride and was able to dictate attacks from a deeper position. https://i.imgur.com/Dpqj5CK.jpg Ruben saw plenty of the ball from a deeper role He made 86 passes, with a 93 per cent accuracy, and sent over a perfectly-weighted chip for Werner to latch onto and score. Defensively Ruben was solid too, making two important clearances. == Terrific Timo == The sight of Werner taking Loftus-Cheek's high pass on his chest before steadying himself and firing into the bottom corner was a joy to behold. He did it time and time again for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and showed exactly why he is still one of Europe's most-feared strikers. It wasn't just his potent touch in front of goal that impressed, Timo also had a hand in our other two goals – working the ball to Saul for our opener and then setting up Lukaku for our winner. https://i.imgur.com/TKYtLXK.jpg Werner finds the corner A goal and two assists deservedly earning Werner the Man of the Match award. == Lukaku gets the job done == Werner's strike partner, Lukaku, certainly deserves a mention too. Romelu didn't see huge amounts of the ball but when he did, he used it wisely and, of course, was in the right place, at the right time to add the finishing touch to Werner's low cross for our winner. https://i.imgur.com/nYs5fGb.jpg Lukaku was in the right place for the Blues The striker looked sharp throughout and on another day could have scored more, with his two other shots both forcing the goalkeeper into a save.
