(WKBW) - After a major delay on Monday, a jury returned a verdict in the case against 70-year-old Roy Harriger, convicting the pastor of two of three counts of coercive criminal sexual conduct against a child. Jurors began deliberating Harriger’s fate on Friday but were sent home after not reaching a decision by the time court closed for the day. They were set to continue Monday and re-listen to three witnesses’ testimony, but there was a major problem. The court recorder had a pipe burst in her office over the weekend, drenching her laptop that contained all of the testimony. At first, she was unable to retrieve the data, which could have resulted in a mistrial. But after a delay, the testimony was recovered. Jurors listened to the witnesses again and then continued deliberations. As the verdict was read on Monday, there were gasps, deep breaths, tears and even a cheer inside Orleans County Court. Harriger had no comment as he walked out of the courtroom. Harriger molested two of his grandchildren around 12 years ago when he was pastor of Wesleyan Church in Lyndonville. He originally faced three counts of incest, but those charges were later dropped. After his arrest last year, at least 15 people in three states have signed affidavits claiming Harriger molested them as children, but many of those cases are past the statute of limitations. Family members spoke to 7 Eyewitness News after sentencing. We are concealing their identities due to the sensitive nature of this case that involves children. One family member said, "I thought of him as my father. The only dad I knew. And for him to do this to my kids killed me because I couldn't believe that a man who was supposed to be a man of God would do this, to anybody. So I just thank whoever is up there, putting him away for good, where he needs to go. I want my kids to enjoy the rest of their lives knowing that he's in jail." There were family members on both sides - those who support Harriger and those who are accusing him of abuse. Those that spoke to 7 Eyewitness news said they are relieved at the guilty verdict but upset that he remains out on bail. Harriger, who is currently the pastor of Community Fellowship Church in the Town of Hartland, has not been allowed to attend church or do anything else that would allow him to interact with children since being charged. He remains free on bail until he is sentenced April 6. He could face up to 25 years in prison for each conviction and the Orleans County DA says he will be pushing for the maximum sentence. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 122.121.1.131 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Christianity/M.1422333987.A.09E.html
