NEWARK – A local pastor said he plans to resign after he was arrested and
charged with sexual battery after being accused of engaging in sexual conduct
with a 15-year-old parishioner on church property.
Scott E. Murphy, 44, last known address 1308 Linnview Crossing, Heath, was
arrested Monday by the Newark Division of Police after providing a taped
confession, Detective Steve Vanoy said.
Murphy is the pastor at Newark Heights Church of God, located on West Church
Street in Newark. He has been charged with sexual battery, a third-degree
felony.
According to court documents, Murphy allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with
the 15-year-old multiple times at the church between Jan. 1 and Monday.
Murphy also reportedly exchanged nude images with the teen during that time
frame.
Detectives "found evidence to support the sending of nude images as well as
text communication between the defendant and victim of a sexual nature,"
court documents stated. The evidence included Murphy "directing and/or asking
the victim to do things sexually to herself or to him."
Vanoy said Murphy admitted to the behavior during an interview Monday.
Detectives do not believe there are any other victims in the case but
encourage anyone with information to call police at 740-670-7200.
According to the church website, Murphy was a pastor there since 2010. A
story The Advocate wrote about Murphy and the church in September said Murphy
helped the church grow from about eight people into a larger congregation.
The Advocate left a message at the church earlier Tuesday seeking comment.
Murphy appeared for a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon in Licking County Common
Pleas Court in front of Magistrate Mattie Klein.
Klein set Murphy's bond at $100,000 and ordered him to have no contact with
the girl and no unsupervised contact with anyone younger than age 18.
A grand jury will look at the case in the coming weeks to consider additional
charges, including dissemination of matter harmful to juveniles and child
endangering, Assistant Licking County Prosecutor Paula Sawyers said.
Murphy has no previous criminal record.
