FAYETTEVILLE — A pastor of a St. Pauls church has been given probation for
sex crimes involving middle school students while he was a principal in
Cumberland County.
David Ellis Edwards, 51, of Fayetteville, pleaded guilty on June 1 to three
counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to court records.
Investigators believe the crimes took place against three males between the
ages of 11 and 14 at Douglas Byrd Middle and Ramsey Street Alternative
Schools, where Edwards served as principal.
Edwards, pastor at First Missionary Baptist Church in St. Pauls, was
sentenced to five years of supervised probation. The former educator must
also register as a sex offender and may not live with any children or have
contact with victims.
The charges were a part of an 11-count indictment alleging sexual abuse
between 2009 and 2013.
Investigators said Edwards touched the boys and forced them to participate in
sex acts, including one assault while the child’s parent sat in a waiting
area of the school office.
According to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, the victims
and their families agreed to the plea deal.
Prosecutors declined to discuss the plea arrangement or the case because of
two civil lawsuits pending against Edwards and the Cumberland County school
system, alleging the system was aware of the sexual abuse happening on the
campuses. A judge has postponed one of the civil lawsuits planned for July 13
to begin on Oct. 26; and a second trial has been moved from Aug. 10 to Nov.
16.
Edwards resigned from Douglas Byrd Middle School in August 2013 when
allegations surfaced, but before charges were filed.
At the time a school spokeswoman said Edwards went away for “educational
reasons,” and the school was unaware of any investigation.
Edwards was principal at Douglas Byrd Middle School for about three years
before he resigned.
He was a teacher at South View and Ramsey Street middle schools from 1998 to
2003. He was an assistant principal at Ramsey Street Alternative Middle for
two years before being promoted to principal in 2005.
Edwards could not be reached for comment and calls to the church where he is
listed as pastor were not returned.
