Ron Leger, the former pastor of Holy Family Parish on Archibald Street, pleaded guilty Monday to three charges of sexual assault. Court heard Leger also ran a drop-in centre on Sterling Avenue between 1980 and 1995, where he met two boys he'd later assault. The offences involved brief fondling of the boys' genitals, including one victim on repeated occasions while asking him "how his big boy was doing." In a press release, the Archdiocese expressed its deep sorrow for the victims. "The courage of the victims to expose the truth is a service which brings to light a terrible darkness in the life of the church," the release reads. "The Archdiocese does not tolerate in any way those who commit this type of abuse and continues to do all it can to assist those victims who have come forward as well as those who have not yet made known their suffering." The Crown and defence have agreed to jointly recommend a sentence for Leger that has yet to be revealed, but the disgraced priest's lawyer told court Monday that he is preparing for what will be "a significant incarceratory period." Leger, who was suspended from all ministerial duties anywhere and forbidden to have anything to do with former parishioners and children when first charged, will remain suspended until he is sentenced, Diocesan spokesman Jean-Maurice Lemoine said. Whether Leger will be defrocked after that is up to the archbishop, he said. The Archdiocese noted it worked closely with Winnipeg police once they became aware of the situation in February 2014. "The Archdiocese of Saint Boniface stands in solidarity with the victims and wishes to be an instrument of reconciliation and healing for them," the press release continued. "We continue to pray for the victims and their families, for the parishioners of Holy Family, and for Ronald Leger." Leger needs prayers, too, Lemoine said. "You have to keep in mind that the victims are the most important persons involved, but if you want to be human, you have to keep in mind that he needs to be prayed for, too," Lemoine said. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 122.121.4.81 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Christianity/M.1436938032.A.946.html
