A pastor's wife is in the Burnet County Jail and charged with multiple counts
of child sexual assault. The victim says the sexual assaults started when she
was seven years old and continued for several years. And police say there
could be more victims.
Misty Rae Hopkins faces a total of 15 counts of sexual assault.
Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson says, "This is probably one of the worst
cases I worked. Over and over continuous sexual assault ... the victim
detailed what happened and it's horrific."
Nelson says the victim made an outcry in December 2014 and the department has
been gathering evidence for nearly a year.
Hopkins' husband was the pastor of a church several years ago. Police think
her husband, who is deceased, was also involved.
According to the indictment, Hopkins not only encouraged and aided her
husband in sexually assaulting the child but also took part in the assaults.
Nelson says, "There was some evidence that he was involved but he is deceased
now, so we are looking at Misty."
The victim says the assaults started when she was seven years old, she's now
in her 20s.
The church has since changed its name and is under a new pastor. We tried to
speak with a representative of the church to ask about the Hopkins' time at
the church but no one was available.
"They definitely had access to children, so my fear is there will be other
victims," says Chief Nelson.
So far, only one victim has come forward. "I ask, I urge that if there are
other victims out there and they see this on the news please contact the
Burnet Police Department," says Nelson.
Misty Rae Hopkins is being held at the Burnet County Jail.
