Baseball America rates Dodger farm system No. 1 now, and things look
promising for 2017

On top of the Dodgers’ being rated No. 1 in Baseball America’s 2016
Organization Talent Rankings, which were released on Thursday, and it being a
fourth straight year in which the organization has risen on the list, the
Dodgers appear poised to maintain the momentum on the minor league side into
2017 as well.

And Julio Urias, Jose De Leon and some of the Dodgers’ other elite prospects
aren’t the only reasons why.


Baseball America national writer Ben Badler believes the Dodger system will
likely be highly thought of again next year because the Dodgers have
positioned themselves well for the 2016 MLB Draft and have had success
through recent drafts, player development and international signings.

“It’s hard for any team to maintain a No. 1 farm system ranking — or stay
close to it — consistently, especially when you’re winning at the Major
League level and picking later in the draft,” Badler said. “The Royals a
few years ago had one of the greatest farm systems we’ve ever seen and
parlayed it into a World Series Champion, but they’re back to being a
middle-of-the-pack system. The Cubs were No. 1 a year ago, but they graduated
a wave of elite prospects to the Majors. They’re No. 20 this year. That
said, the Dodgers do have three of the top 36 picks and five in the top 101
of this year’s draft, they are aggressive in the Cuban market and the depth
in the system is good enough that even with players like Corey Seager and
others set to graduate to the Major League club, there’s still a strong
chance they can maintain a top-10 farm system a year from now.”

The people who did the rankings for Baseball America were high on the
organization last year and thus ranked the Dodgers at No. 3, but weren’t
convinced that the depth was there outside of Joc Pederson, Seager and Urias,
Badler said.

The staff saw elite players at the top again in 2016 — Seager, Urias, Jose
De Leon and now Frankie Montas — but was now persuaded by how much talent
there is beyond those players. Badler specifically pointed out position
players Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo and right-hander Jharel Cotton.

The Dodgers have seven players on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects list:
Seager (No. 1), Urias (4), De Leon (23), Kenta Maeda (50), Bellinger (54),
Grant Holmes (72) and Verdugo (100).

That list was released Friday and is now the third major prospect ranking
that has Seager at No. 1 — MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus also placed him
at the top.

Badler mentioned a couple of other players who don’t have the shine of all
the aforementioned players, but who are potential gems.

“Beyond the standouts of the system who ranked among the top 10 prospects,
three players to keep an eye on are Willie Calhoun, Yusniel Diaz (a signing
the Dodgers haven’t announced yet) and Johan Mieses,” Badler said. “
Calhoun was a great pick last year in the fourth round and a guy who is a
gifted hitter with a sweet, pure swing who was productive right away after
signing. He’s not very big and his defense needs work, but there’s
surprising power in his bat and he can really, really hit. Diaz was a
big-ticket signing out of Cuba who excelled throughout his time in Cuba’s
youth leagues and even in Serie Nacional, which is Cuba’s top league, as an
18-year-old playing against players much older than him. He has a promising
combination of tools, athleticism and hand-eye coordination. Mieses was a
much smaller signing a few years ago out of the Dominican Republic, and while
there’s still some rawness to his game, particularly with pitch recognition,
he’s a physical outfielder with solid tools across the board who has been
pushed through the system at a quick pace. All three of those players could
be top 10 prospects in the system after the season.”

Earlier this week, ESPN.com’s Keith Law ranked the Dodger system No. 2
behind the Atlanta Braves, who bolstered their farm system with the Shelby
Miller trade to Arizona and Andrelton Simmons deal to the Angels. The Braves
are No. 3 in Baseball America’s rankings, behind Houston.
