Cartaya, who just turned 20 in September, made his stateside debut in 2021 by bl
asting 10 home runs in 31 games for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, hitting .298/.409/.6
14 for the Quakes before missing the final two-plus months due to hamstring and
back injuries.
Miller excelled in his first professional season of actual games in 2021, postin
g a 2.40 ERA with 70 strikeouts (with a 30.4-percent strikeout rate) against onl
y 13 walks in 56⅓ innings in 17 games, including 14 starts across High-A Great
Lakes and Double-A Tulsa.
The Dodgers named Vargas the Branch Rickey Award winner as minor league player o
f the year on the hitting side, after excellent performances at both High-A Grea
t Lakes (142 wRC+) and Double-A Tulsa (141 wRC+). Vargas set a Loons record with
a 26-game hitting streak, and across both levels hit .319/.380/.526 with 23 hom
e runs and 27 doubles, while playing double-digit games at second base and first
base in addition to his regular duties at third base.
BA gave Cartaya an overall 65 grade on the 20-80 scouting scale, while Miller an
d Vargas both were 60s.
