[請益] lay of the land意思?

剛剛在看dear abby 有一段文字是這樣
 Sometimes when starting a new job, it is wise to remain quiet until one gets
the "lay of the land" and understands how the company functions before
jumping in.

我查英文字典 lay of the land
他的解釋是the arrangement or organization of something other than land.
前半部我看得懂 但後半部something other than land又看得有點霧煞煞

所以想問lay of the land的具體意思到底是什麼意思呢?
