Firstly, I will comment on the question from the comment under the original
thread. That is whether the sentence should use "that" or "he". What I think
is that "that" is wrong and "he" is also wrong. The correct usage is "who".
Therefore, the sentence would be "He is one of the greatest musicians 'who'
(is, are, be) known to us". The most important reason is that using "that"
to refer to humans is "dehumanizing" the person in the subject. However,
I have to clarify here that the usage of "that" in such cases where the noun
is refering to humans is also common in Enslish writing. Further, there are
a lot of good sources that aruge in
both way.
For example, consult the following sources:

(Google ngrams comparison for "people who, people that")

As you can see, in the ngrams comparison "people that" is very popular around
1600s and the popularity decreases as we move towards a more recent time.
However, this is not to say that this specific usage is wrong; it's merely
the writing style of the author(s).

Next, I would like to address the original question. The usage of "be" is
completely out of the question space since "be" is too generic to refer to
anything in this case so we are left with "is" and "are". As Dunchee already
commented in the original post, ... one of [plural noun] ... can be treated
as both plural or singular. In cases such as this I would personally use "is"
since I would treat the noun is referenced to a singular noun (he in this case
).
However, in the source given (i.e. https://ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q
=o
it states that this issue is still in debate but with a bias towards singular.

Thus, these two issues that were brought up are merely based on the authors'
writing styles. I will argue that, since language usages are heavily
dependent on the people who use them, as long as the usages are following the
general rules and there are trustable sources backing each debatable claim
then there is no reason to claim that there is only one answer to the
question; these issues are just the same as every other controversial issues
that there are.
