最近讀到有seem 與 appear用法時 看到書上寫著: seem或appear之後的to be 後所接的形容詞只做敘述用法時,to be不能省略。 除非該形容詞只做敘述用法(used only predicatively)如awake, asleep, afraod等等, 則to be 不能省。 to be 可省 He seemed (to be) surprised at the news. This seems (to be) a serious matter. I seem (to be) unable to enjoy myself. to be 不能省 The baby seems to be asleep / to be sleeping. My enquires seem to have been resented. She happened to be out when I called. We chanced to meet in the park. There seems to have been some mistake. It appears unlikely that we'll arrive on time.
