[請益] that在這裡是否能省略?

原文出自CNN雜誌, 其中有句是這樣:


We're not quite sure why they're pink in color. When they're dead,
they become white in color. So we think that the pink color may be
sort of a blushing effect, that that's how they regulate their internal heat.

最後一句 "that that's how they ..." 中，

1. 第一個that是不是指前一句 "sort of a blushing effect" ?

2. "that that's how they..." 這句能否變成 "that's how they...."
                                           (省略第一個that)
