[文法] 省略if的倒裝句

[Gloyia (時間如水銀落地)]

看到一個例句，他說如果could或might要倒裝的話，要加but或just等副詞

Could I but see my wife, I would die a happy man.
（要是能再看到我的妻子，我死也暝目）


還原後應該是If I could but see my wife, I would die a happy man.

感覺but在裡面怪怪的，請問but在這一句裡是什麼意思?
