[文法] otherwise would be 的文法問題

你們好，剛剛讀的一段文章，其中的一句為

  Geenhouse gases are necessary because they keep the planet's surface warmer
than it otherwise would be.


就我的認知，otherwise 為副詞，故為何不是it would otherwise be 而是 it otherwis
e would be?

另外請問這句怎麼翻比較好？
