標題[文法] in, after, ago, later區分

今天被學生問到一題題目，
沒辦法解釋的很清楚，
希望板上高手分享觀念，
題目如下。
Jenny and mom went shopping this afternoon,
and they came back with a lot of bags _________.
A)in three hours
B)after three hours
C)three hours ago
第四個選項我忘了..
我的想法是：
以國中生簡單的文法觀念來看in+時間用於未來式，
所以A不選。
如果想表達應改為three hours later.
此題的答案為B，after+時間用於過去式沒問題，
但為何C不行?
若解釋成他們下午去逛街，三小時前帶了一堆戰利品回來，
這樣不能選C嗎?
