Here are a few. Should Zhao Ziyang, general secretary
of the party until near the end of the Tiananmen
demonstrations, remain under house arrest, silenced
for expressing measured sympathy for the students?
Should it remain true that Tiananmen was a
"counter-revolutionary uprising"? Should all several
hundred members of the Democratic Party be behind
bars? Should Taiwan be threatened with invasion
if the government there uses the word "independent"
about itself? Is the Dalai Lama really a "criminal splittist"
and should Tibetans who demand religious freedom
be subject to imprisonment and torture?

China is not the nearly totalitarian Maoist state of old.
But instead of the fire-breathing dragon there is now,
in the brilliant image of Princeton's Perry Link,
"the anaconda in the chandelier." Like the giant snake,
the Communist Party need do little. It is simply there,
as everyone knows, and what provokes it is unclear.

The anaconda's constant, silent message is "You decide."
This kind of threat, usually silent, occasionally and
unpredictably enforced with a burst of violence,
is remarkably immune to reform.
