[文法] a lot of接單數可數名詞？

大家好，請教一下

There is not much difference between 'a lot of' and 'lots of': they are both
used mainly before singular uncountable and plural nouns, and before pronouns.

(Practical English Usage 3rd edition Point333.2)

PEU說a lot of後接單數不可數名詞、複數名詞、複數代名詞
（pronouns應該指是這個意思吧？）
(更新：我現在覺得pronouns應該是指各種代名詞，而非複數代名詞)

但我看到以下的句子：

A lot of the play is very funny.

'You'll find that everybody will try and help their colleague.' — 'Yeah.
There's a lot of that.'

這裡的'the play', 'that'(我覺得應該用those，表示很多那樣的行為),
 'it'（我覺得應該用複數的they，表示很多動詞都這樣）不都是單數可數名詞嗎？

為何前面能用a lot of呢？

a. 'the play'確實是單數、可數名詞。

b. 'that'如果指try and help的「行為」的話，後來我看麥克米倫詞典的解釋：
'Behaviour' is usually an uncountable noun, so it is rarely used in the plural.

The plural form ‘behaviours’ is a specialized term used in fields such as
psychology, social science, and education. This use is much less common than
the uncountable use.

所以這裡確實是不可數沒錯。

c. 'it'應該是指前面的the tricky part。

網友Tarheel說：
 "a lot of the play" means "a large portion of the play" Similarly, "a lot of
our land" means "a large portion of the land".

所以 a lot of 確實可以接單數可數名詞，表示那個名詞的「很大一部分」？
