標題Re: [文法] 外國網友回應中的being adjectives
時間Sat Feb 3 13:35:35 2018
大家好,昨天後來在另一個論壇有後續回應了
https://goo.gl/ta2j7k
不過對於他的回應我有不懂的地方orz
------
針對這句話:
your very best — 'level' and 'best' being adjectives.
(註:上述的'level' and 'best'應該是'level' and 'very'才對,我一開始打錯,
導致後來網友回答的引用也跟著錯。
後來我有在論壇裡說明這個筆誤了,所以底下回應中的'best'請自行在腦海中改為'very')
我問:
I don't understand why there is a 'being' there. Is it reduced from
something? Could you tell me its grammar point?
網友Mister Micawber答:
'Being' just heads a non-finite clause complementing 'level' and 'best'.
他舉例:
My brother, being an airline pilot, is away from home most of the time.
----------
1.想問的是,上述的head在朗文辭典有兩個我認為可能合適的解釋:
a. to be in charge of a team, government, organization etc
b. to be at the top of a list or group of people or things
我傾向是第一個解釋,也就是「引導、引領」的意思,不知是否正確呢?
2.回答中的complementing 'level' and 'best'指的是a non-finite clause還是
'Being'?
換句話說,指下列的哪一個呢?
a. 'Being' just heads a non-finite clause, and 'Being' complements 'level'
and 'best'.
b. 'Being' just heads a non-finite clause, and the non-finite clause
complements 'level' and 'best'.
('Being' just heads a non-finite clause which complements 'level' and 'best'.)
已經在那邊提問了,不過對方還沒有回應,因此想先來請教各位。謝謝!

推 l10nel: 1. head是語言學/文法用語,意為"中心詞"/"核心" 02/03 14:41
→ l10nel: 2. 從他的寫法,宜理解為b.,但他說法有點鬆, 02/03 14:42
→ l10nel: non-finite clause是整個句子,句子並不會補足 02/03 14:43
→ l10nel: level and best,句子包含了level and best。所以應該說, 02/03 14:43
→ l10nel: "being adjectives"中的adjectives是所謂主詞補語,作用在 02/03 14:43
→ l10nel: 補足主詞(level and best)使句意完整。being(在finite 02/03 14:44
→ l10nel: 句當中是are)是non-finite子句的中心詞。 02/03 14:44
網友回應了,果然l10nel大說的一樣,head是語法學的專有名詞!
另外第二題的回答,也確實是B!

Head
Definition:
A head is a constituent of an endocentric construction that, if standing
alone, could perform the syntactic function of the whole construction.
It may govern the:
agreement of grammatical categories, such as person and number, or
occurrence of other constituents.
Examples:
(English)
In the following construction, the noun 'chair' heads the noun phrase. It also
determines number on the verb:
The wooden chairs in the corner are finished.
In the following construction, the verb 'given' heads the verb phrase 'would
have given'. It also determines the occurrence of a direct object and indirect
object later in the clause:
Mary would have given Bill a dictionary.
