標題[請益] 辭典中的I caught on to what it was...

各位好,請教一下
在辭典看到以下例句:
I caught on to what it was the guy was saying.

我的想法:
a. I caught on to (something).
b. it was what the guy was saying.
-->c. I caught on to what it was the guy was saying.
a句的something和b句的what有交集,所以兩句合併時,把what移到前面當連接詞,
就成為c.
網友Raymott說
Yes, you can. Also: "I caught on to what it was that the guy was saying".
但我認為照他的說法,就會變成:
d. I caught on to what it was that the guy was saying.
推回我的b,就會成為
-->b'. it was what (= thing(s) that) that the guy was saying. (?)
變成有重複的that了。出處:

(PS 我覺得原句的結構就類似這句:I am not what my wife says I am.)

解決了:
f. It was XXX (that) the guy was saying. (It-cleft sentence)
→g. What (= XXX) was it (that) the guy was saying?
h. I caught on to the question (= What was it (that) the guy was saying?).
g.+h.
→i. I caught on to what it was (that) the guy was saying.
後半部是一個名詞子句,但這個名詞子句是由疑問句和分裂句轉化而來。(暈)
