[Ask ] sentence that difficult to understand

[fs11 (siang)]

here is the sentence I read it from a book

" The lake slowed its thrashing to a soft, even beat."

it has wonderful structure just like a poem , so I can't figure out what it me
ans directly... just a very blurry understanding.

could anybody in here help me to translate this sentence , make it become more
 "close to people " QQ thx a lot!
