The first-place Washington Nationals will be without their closer for a while.

Jonathan Papelbon landed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a right
intercostal strain, a day after manager Dusty Baker said he was unavailable
against the Cubs because of unspecified soreness.

Shawn Kelley picked up a five-out save Monday and would appear to be in line
to close games in Papelbon's absence. Papelbon has converted 16 of 18 save
opportunities this season and is 1-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 25 appearances
overall.
