(A) had discovered 17 nearby stars that are orbited by planets
(B) had discovered 17 nearby stars with planets orbiting them that were
(C) had discovered that there were 17 nearby stars that were orbited by
planets
(D) have discovered 17 nearby stars with planets orbiting them that are
(E) have discovered that 17 nearby stars are orbited by planets
本題的3-2 split為had/have
相信許多人看到had的時候一定是往句子裡找有沒有其他的過去式動作吧？
然後看到剩下的另一個動作是are orbited就覺得沒有，把had刪掉。
可是，請記住，過去完成式在句意上的意義除了「過去的過去」之外，
還可以當做「從過去某時間點，持續到過去另一時間點」的時態。
因為「完成式」本身即有表達持續性的功能，
所以「過去完成式」可以表達「過去一段時間（但並未持續到現在）」的時態。
所以這時候，句首的by 1999（直到1999年之前）就是句意關鍵了。
「直到1999年以前」代表過去持續到過去的句意。
所以我們必須使用過去完成式had，而非持續到現在的現在完成式have。
接下來，B選項跟C選項分別考到prep+N+Ving跟there be的用法。
提示：
若是要用prep+N+Ving介係詞後面的N必須要是修飾語內容的核心成分，
不然會造成句意斷裂（介係詞片語只接得到N本身，接不到後面的Ving）
there be N 提示：
若N有發出的動作－－there be N Ving.. 或 there be N who/which/that V...
則都算是冗長，因為可以直接改寫成 N(S) + V的形式。
比如C選項的
there were 17 nearby stars that were orbited by planets
就可以被改寫成17 nearby stars were orbited by planets （S+V）
因此答案選A。
