今天要來跟大家討論的是OG2016的第37題。
這題也不少同學來問過，而且剛好這兩天在PTT上也有同學在詢問，所以先在這裡跟大家分享Kory個人的解題思路。
Although the school would receive financial benefits if it had soft drink vending machines in the cafeteria, we should not allow them. Allowing soft drink machines there would not be in our students’ interest. If our students start drinking more soft drinks, they will be less healthy.
The argument depends on which of the following?
(A) If the soft drink vending machines were placed in the cafeteria, students would consume more soft drinks as a result.
(B) The amount of soft drinks that most students at the school currently drink is not detrimental to their health.
(C) Students are apt to be healthier if they do not drink soft drinks at all than if they just drink small amounts occasionally.
(D) Students will not simply bring soft drinks from home if the soft drink vending machines are not placed in the cafeteria.
(E) The school’s primary concern should be to promote good health among its students.
好的，這是一題assumption的題型。assumption的題型我還是那句老話，只要選項取非原題的argument就會被weaken，這是非常重要的思維，一定要練習到變成反射的反應。
首先把題目大概看懂：
雖然如果學校在餐廳裡設置非酒精飲料投飲機可能可以多尻學生一些錢，我們卻不應讓學校這麼做。允許在那裏設置投飲機可能不符合學生的利益。如果我們學生開始喝更多的非酒精飲料，他們會變得比較不健康。
結論句大概會像這樣：
more drinks--->less healthy------------------->should not allow (未發生)
分析：
首先，這是一個判斷類型的題目。根據一串的因果關係作者下了一個"不應該允許設置投飲機"的結論。
這題之所以特別就是在於下結論之前有一段連續的因果關係，這樣的題目在CR裡面是相對少見的。不過如果已經上過Kory IR課程的同學，應該有印象在two part analysis裡面我們講過的一種題型：某一因果關係(cause-and-effect)造成最後的結果，也就是IR的第37題(珊瑚的ㄘㄨㄚˋ賽)跟第45題(三疊紀的結束)。又或者上過Kory AWA課程的同學可能也記得我們補充的一個特殊類型：滑坡謬誤(slippery slope)，這題的思維其實就有點類似上述的連續因果關係。
進入正題，這題其實最難的一點在於分辨哪些是premise。conclusion我想大部分同學應該都能抓到we should not allow them，問題是後面的Allowing soft drink machines there would not be in our students’ interest. If our students start drinking more soft drinks, they will be less healthy.到底算是甚麼呢？
答案：他們都是premise。
首先，Allowing soft drink machines there would not be in our students’ interest. 這句是完全的直述句，把句子放到結論句之前或許更清楚，但在這裡只是因為前面的結論句跟最開始的although連成了一句話而已，同學不妨把這邊想成作者先告訴我們設置投飲機這件事不符合學生利益，原因就是接下來If our students start drinking more soft drinks, they will be less healthy這句話，最後說雖然可以設置可以讓學校賺多一點錢，但是我們不該讓學校這麼做。
而最完整的因果關係鍊其實是：
vending machine ---> more drinks ---> healthy ----> students interests -----------------------> should not allow
接著我們去找下列哪一個選項的反向將可以切斷連續因果關係中"可以切斷的部分"，於是我們發現已不違背前提以及「"可以理解"或"放諸四海皆準"的合理假設」(請參考下一段的解釋)的角度去想，能夠切斷的就只剩下vending machine是不是一定會造成"more drinks?"，這邊特別特別注意，more drinks的反向是減少(不太合理)或相同都可以喔！所以有沒有可能vending machine並沒有讓學生喝的飲料變多，而只是一樣多而已？答案當然是肯定的，也許沒有投飲機買我就自己帶或者從別的地方買到"一樣多"的飲料！
這邊也提供另一種思考角度：
如果同學可以接受看完題幹應該可以理解的是必要條件是healthy跟student interest應該是等價的關係，當然這邊如果選項裡有一個說條件是"健康是學生利益的一部分"這樣邏輯上勉強也可以當作答案，但是他的反向"健康不是學生利益的一部分"明顯違背大眾知識，這樣的條件CR裡面視為"可以理解"或"放諸四海皆準"的合理假設，是不需要提出來的。所以我們也可以觀察到題目絕不會出現這樣的選項。
而如果能夠將上述的第二種思路搞清楚的同學，這題就變成了單純的斷橋型了！

選項分析：
(A) If the soft drink vending machines were placed in the cafeteria, students would consume more soft drinks as a result.
正確答案，他的反向(would not)完整了說明了剛剛上面提到的概念而weaken了argument
(B) The amount of soft drinks that most students at the school currently drink is not detrimental to their health.
現在喝多少會不會傷害都不是重點(topic)，重點是有了vending machine之後的狀況，B的反向(is detrimental)也不會影響argument
(C) Students are apt to be healthier if they do not drink soft drinks at all than if they just drink small amounts occasionally.
通通都不喝會不會更健康明顯跳脫我們討論的範圍(scope)，大家一定要把焦點放在結論句上，也就是有了vending machine會不會有影響
(D) Students will not simply bring soft drinks from home if the soft drink vending machines are not placed in the cafeteria.
最混淆的就是這個選項了！將D取反向之後去思考，首先可以注意的是就算有了vending machine學生還是有可能自己再帶，然後喝更多，也就是說這跟有沒有vending machine其實沒有太大關係。而且更重要的是認真用邏輯的角度去想，當他們需要自己帶，那就表示原題幹裡的結論句"已經成立"了！之後同學又有其他管道，那也不會weaken原來的結論了！另外D的反向是如果沒有投飲機，他們會自己帶，那我們怎麼知道哪個情況會喝比較多呢？
(E) The school’s primary concern should be to promote good health among its students.
又是一個混淆的選項！首先可以注意的是E選項有建議的字眼should，已經不太偏好，反向之後是學校最重要的不是提倡健康，這樣也沒有反駁來的conclusion，因為就算不是最重要的還是可以是我們在意的一部分阿！另外其實conclusion也沒有提到要"promote"，我們只是要"不傷害"而已(topic)
又是一個頭昏眼花！但希望有幫助到需要的同學！
