Hi,我是Davin，Donz GMAT 諮詢顧問。每次在諮詢或影片之中，我總是說SC的檢討是連同
”正確選項”一起檢視的過程，借此了解出題的邏輯跟考點。僅僅審視錯誤選項是遠遠不
夠的。
不過SC官方題確實出現過例外，我們來看看這題：
Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth, to gather
information about its size and curvature of its surface, new observations
have been made by astronomers that show with startling directness the
large-scale geometry of the universe.
(A)Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth, to gather
information about its size and curvature of its surface, new observations
have been made by astronomers
(B)Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth for gathering
information about its size and also the curvature of its surface, new
observations have been made by astronomers
(C)Similar to the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth, where
they gathered information about its size and the curvature of its surface,
astronomers have made new observations
(D)Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth gathering
information about its size and the curvature of its surface, astronomers have
made new observations
(E)Just as with the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth,
gathering information about its size and curvature of the surface,
astronomers have made new observations
快速解題：
1.看到Like，直覺這題很可能出比較架構，借此我們排除了(A)(B)，兩者比較對象是
navigators與observations，並不符合邏輯。
2.(C)選項句首使用similar to來形成比較兩個名詞的結構是錯誤的。(雖然很久以前是
對的，但現在GMAT都認定這是錯的。Ron：There are times when similar to is
acceptable.)
3.(E)選項Just as with X..., Y...，不平行，且常見慣用語：Just as+句子, so+句子
。
OK，接著我們選出了選項(D)。雖然他是正確選項，但是奇怪了，”gathering
information about…”前面不加逗號，形成了”無comma+Ving”的分詞修飾型態，修飾
緊鄰的名詞，但修飾Earth根本不合理，畢竟地球不會自己gathering information。
依照GMAT SC的規則：如果要修飾前方句子，則必須在句子後面加入逗號 (comma)並使用
Ving! 而如果沒有加入逗號，則修飾對象則為緊臨的名詞。
For example:
John talked to Helen, asking for help. (John was asking for help)
John talked to Helen asking for help. (Helen was asking for help) (雖然這樣句
意會比較怪)
所以很明顯，GMAT 在正確答案 (D) 上，出現了瑕疵 (連GMAT大神Ron也對此題頗有微詞)
。不過同學在考場中，必須專注於選出 “best answer”，在其他答案錯誤更嚴重的情形
下，我們還是必須選 (D)。
