我是謝忠理老師，對於 GRE 寫作中 issue 題目如何寫的問題，我提
供教學心得給大家做參考。
【原題】 Some people believe that universities should
require every student to take a variety of courses outside
the student's field of study. Others believe that
universities should not force students to take any courses
other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in
their chosen fields.
【原題大意】有人認為大學應該要求每位學生修習他們自己研習領域
之外的各式各樣課程。其他人則認為除了有助於學生做就業準備的課
程之外，大學不應該強迫學生修習任何學科。
【Instruction】
Write a response in which you discuss which view more
closely aligns with your own position and explain your
reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, you should address both of the
views presented.
【問題】
原 po 問：「這種 A 覺得 xxx，但 B 覺得 yyy 的題目，是直接選
邊站（支援 A 狂打 B）比較好？還是先兩邊各打五十大板再提出自
己的意見比較好呢？」
【說明】
1. Issue 題目目前有六類指示 (instruction)。ETS 特別強調
It is important that you address the central issue
according to the specific instructions. Each task is
accompanied by one of the following sets of instructions.
所以不論是 issue 還是 argument 都要按照各題的 instruction 去寫。
2. 本題 instruction 中明白指出要考生 "you should address
both of the views presented" 所以兩種說法都要去探討。說出
兩者各自的優、缺點，最後說自己的看法是哪一種比較好。
3. 如果經過分析之後，認為兩種說法都不夠理想，可以提出自己的
主張。像是目前這個題目，一方說要每位學生都要修各式各樣的
其他課程，一方說任何一門課都不應該修，兩方都過於極端。所
以到後來應該是採取中庸之道才合理，這時就可以提出自己認為
比較理想的方法。
4. 如果要支援原文某方立場，也要兩方都論述後，得出合理結論才
可以，不能放著一方不說，只打他方缺點。
5. GRE 寫作批改很嚴，高分不容易。而依照 instruction 來寫作，
會是取得好分數的第一步。
