historians document the proliferation of material possessions that apparently

explanation, De Vries describes what he calls an "industrious revolution," in
which more household members spent more time producing commodities, and in
turn purchased an increasing proportion of the things they needed. De Vries
advocates differentiation among household members in assessment of the
