GRE 的閱讀題目類型不多，一般來說，主旨題、細節題、推論題就佔
了至少 80% 的題目。而本題是「目的」類考題，在剩下的兩成考題
中屬於主要類型考題。
解目的題的方式要注意：
1. 不要多看無用資訊，除非對於背景不熟或是解題真正需要，否則
應該盡量以題幹句以及前一句為解題主要資訊來源。
2. 目的題至少 90% 的答案都在題幹句的前面，所以除非真的有需要
，不要從題幹句的後面找答案。
3. 精讀題幹句以及所需的其他句子 (通常就是前面一句)。
解題說明：
1. 這篇文章總共 6 個句子，題幹問了第 5 句的目的。
2. 解題時，第 1-3 句是基本資訊，有被考到的就仔細看，如果只是
要解本題，則大約看過，知道大概內容就好。萬一有需要時再回
頭細看。
3. 精讀第 4 句：所謂精讀，在我教學中，是指用精確的中文翻譯將
題目意思確實理解。關於精確中文翻譯的解題好處，以及如何眼
睛看到哪裡，中文翻到哪裡的技巧，我在「閱讀快憶通」這堂公
益課程中，花了 3 個小時仔細說明，對於單字量不差，但是閱讀

第 4 句：De Vries advocates differentiation among
household members in assessment of the consequences of
this industrious revolution, arguing that it increased
women's economic power.
精讀：「 De Vries 主張，要區分家庭成員在評估這場勤勉革命
的成果，他認為，勤勉革命提升了女性的經濟能力。」
提醒一聲，雖然將 industrious (勤勉的 )看成 industrial (工
業的 )，而把「勤勉革命」看成「工業革命」，對於此處解題沒
有什麼影響，但是在填充題裡，可能就會有致命後果。
4. 精讀第 5 句：
第 5 句：It should be said that women's low wages
precluded economic independence.
精讀：「我們應該說女性的低薪使其經濟無法獨立自主。」
5. 思考重點：
(1) 兩句主詞不同：第 4 句主詞是 De Vries，內容是 De Vries
的主張；而第 5 句的主詞是 It，在文法上是先行受詞，其
同位語內容是後面的 that... 子句。
(2) 第 5 句內容明顯是作者的主張，論點則是反對前一句中 De
Vries 所稱的「勤勉革命提升了女性的經濟能力」。作者認
為，就算是女性的經濟能力有提升，也絕對沒能達到能夠經
濟獨立自主的程度，而原因就是薪資太低。
(3) 所以在看答案之前，我們可以說第 5 句推翻了 (或是部分推
翻了) 第 4 句的主張。
6. 選答：選答的技巧與看原文的能力一樣重要，常有人原文看懂但卻選錯答案。
(A) imply that an important fact has been overlooked by
most historians
(B) call the reader's attention back to a fact
introduced at the beginning of the passage
(C) explain why the author rejects a particular
explanation for a historical change
(D) caution against overestimating the implications of a
particular historical change
(E) challenge the evidence used for supporting an
argument described earlier in the passage
(1) 目的題的答案與主旨題的答案很像，通常一開頭就是動詞，
如果可以，先用動詞消掉不可能的答案，進一步，可以用動
詞＋受詞的組合再消掉一些答案。
比方說，答案 (C) 開頭是 explain，這個答案應該可以直
接消掉。
再來答案 (E) challenge the evidence，也可以消掉。因
為第 5 句要 challenge 的是結論，不是證據。
(2) 剩下的三個答案：
(A) imply that an important fact has been overlooked
by most historians
光是最後的 most hisorians 就錯了，因為第 5 句針對的
是 De Vries。
(B) call the reader's attention back to a fact
introduced at the beginning of the passage
call the reader's attention 沒問題，但是看到 back
to a fact 就知道錯了，因為第 5 句推翻的是前一句的結
論，不是事實。就算原本沒有看過前 3 句的內容，也千萬
不要回頭去看前 3 句說些什麼，用點邏輯想想就知，這樣
做一定浪費時間。
(3) 最後是正確答案
(D) caution against overestimating the implications
of a particular historical change
「提醒大家注意不要高估了某個歷史改變的影響」，選答之
前先將答案內容作配對，對得上就可以選。
(a) caution against overestimating 沒問題，因為第 5
句反駁第 4 句。
(b) a particular historical change 明顯對應到
industrious revolution，所以沒問題。
(c) the implications 顯然是指 "it increased women's
economic power"，所以也沒問題。
7. 最後確定答案是 (D)
以上說明，適用於所有目的題。
最後再強調一次，目的題答案幾乎都是往前找一句，除非必要，不要
多看，也不要往後面找答案。
