Kings' Rajon Rondo loves to garden, currently growing tomatoes After a tumultuous half season with the Dallas Mavericks, Rajon Rondo signed a one-year deal with the Sacramento Kings in the offseason. Despite the Kings' mediocre record, Rondo has been playing well in Sacramento, averaging 12.9 points, 10.9 assists (leads the league) and 7.7 rebounds a game. Rondo has also already recorded four triple-doubles and is the one point guard Kings head coach George Karl trusts, often playing him over 40 minutes a game. It is early but Rondo seems like a good fit with the Kings. He has even established literal roots in Sacramento, becoming an avid gardener and planting tomatoes in his garden. From an excellent profile on Rondo from the Sacramento Bee's Jason Jones: So how does Rondo, 29, make the most of his free time these days? “I'm more so into reading now,” Rondo said. “Different religions, growing plants, I'm doing things of that nature. It's kind of crazy. I never thought I'd be doing things like this, at this age. I always thought I'd get into gardening or something like that when I was 50.” Rondo's garden (he's currently growing tomatoes) might be nice, but he isn't ready to become a full-time gardener. “I didn't finish college,” said Rondo, who attended Kentucky. “I don't look back on it or regret it. My goal was to do what I'm doing now and I reached that goal. But now I have new interests and new hobbies and new goals in life I'm looking forward to. I want to make a change and make a difference and continue educating myself.” While it's not surprising that Rondo took up gardening after moving to California, it is interesting to learn about his new hobby. Especially since, Rondo has always been super competitive in everything he does. Whether it's Connect Four or basketball, Rondo plays to win. So he probably is equally passionate about gardening. Which is why if you live in the Sacramento-area, don't be shocked to see Rondo selling his tomatoes at your local Farmers Market in the near future.
