According to ESPN, it’s a very real possibility.

It does make sense, to a certain extent. If the Miami Heat intend on trading
Whiteside before the deadline, there’s a good chance that whoever makes the
deal for him HAS to be willing to offer him the max contract that he’s going
to be looking for this summer.
No one is going to trade for Whiteside without being sure that they want to
go forward with him. And if the Lakers are sure that they’re willing to
offer a max contract to Whiteside, it would make sense to trade for him now.

Though, if they decide to take that route, it’s going to hurt them. They’re
going to have to give something up. And, if you’re the Miami Heat, you’d
pretty much take anything at this point – picks, or perhaps even a shooter
(*cough* Lou Williams *cough*).

Something like trading Luol Deng‘s expiring contract, along with Whiteside,
for Williams works. The Heat would get an additional scorer off the bench and
the Lakers would get their big man. If they’re willing, that’s something
the Heat and Lakers should think about.
