Abstract
Metaphor and metonymy are widely manifested in languages. Prior to 1980, they
were considered rhetorical devices. However, the publication of Metaphors We
Live By by Lakoff and Johnson in 1980 brought about a revolutionary change in
the understanding of their role. This talk will begin by introducing the key
concepts of metaphor and metonymy, followed by a brief review of their
development from 1980 to 2021. Finally, the speaker will discuss four studies
focusing on metaphor in Taiwan Hakka. These studies delve into the
complexities of the interrelationships among the forms and functions of
metaphor, the various patterns of their cognitive mechanisms, and the
continuum of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural specificity and universality.
