David Price the ace Toronto Blue Jays needed

For the second consecutive trade deadline, there was a monster trade involving
elite hurler David Price. It has nothing to do with character or any other
extraneous reason that a club might lead to a player being traded twice within
the same calendar year, but rather a pair of teams that didn’t feel they could
retain the impending free agent long-term, and decided to cash in instead.
連續兩年731交易大限,都發生了關於菁英投手David Price的大交易.Price沒有個性上,或
是任何會迫使球隊交易選手的個人問題,僅是兩隻球隊(光芒與老虎),認為自己無法與即將
的自由球員達成延長合約,於是決定將Price的價值兌現.

While the price to acquire…Price was obviously steep, the Toronto Blue Jays
made the move that they needed in order to get over a club like the New York
Yankees or a wild card opponent like the Los Angeles Angels.
雖然拿到Price的price很高,多倫多藍鳥完成了一個他們需要的動作,以讓他們能夠在美東

Even after the David Price trade, the Blue Jays still have a pitching staff
that ranks in the middle of the road, statistically, among starting staffs
throughout baseball. They’re 13th in the league in WAR among starting pitchers
, sporting the 15th ranked ERA (4.08), and 21st ranked FIP (4.26). They rank
27th in the league in strikeouts per nine, at just 6.11, and walk the 11th most
batters in the league per nine, at 2.72. They’re not particularly adept at
stranding baserunners either, with a LOB% of just 71.4%.

In each of those regards, David Price represents a significant upgrade. Price
brings 8.72 K/9 on the season to the Jays, a significant upgrade from the 6.11
they’re posting as a starting staff. His walks per nine on the season sit at
just 1.90, and he has a 0.82 mark for his career. His ERA for the year comes
in currently at 2.35, with a 2.98 FIP to go along with it. Even better, he’s
stranding 79.9% of baserunners thus far on the year. Every area in which the
Blue Jays are lacking, Price represents a significant upgrade.

And we’ve already seen that in each of his starts thus far with Toronto.

Starting for the Jays who are directly in the midst of a playoff race, Price
has gone out and put two overwhelmingly dominant performances on the board. The
first came against the Minnesota Twins, in which he tossed eight innings,
struck out 11, and walked just a pair, while only surrendering an earned run.

He then when out in his next start, an even bigger outing against the New York
Yankees, and duplicated that performance. His walks were a touch higher, with
three on the day, but he threw seven innings of shutout ball, with seven
punchouts. Against the team that the Blue Jays are in a direct fight with for
the American League East crown, it was not only an impressive start for Price,
but an incredibly loud statement by Toronto.

Not that any of this should surprise us. David Price has always brought an
incredibly durable arm, with a fastball that sits in the mid-90s (averaging
94.0 MPH this year) coupled with a changeup that drops things down to 85.2 MPH,
which he’s thrown just over 22% of the time this year. Add in that 89 MPH
cutter, which comes in at 12.8% usage, and the occasional curve, and that’s a
terrifying mix coming out of the hand of David Price for opposing hitters.

And what that does, in addition to giving the Blue Jays the ace at the top of
the rotation, is make things very, very difficult for opposing hitters late in
ballgames. The Blue Jays might just have the best late-inning combination of
relievers this side of Kansas City, in Aaron Sanchez and Roberto Osuna. Price
going seven or eight innings in each outing, something that we’ve come to
expect from him, allows the Jays to hand it directly to one of their power arms
out of the bullpen, making his addition all the more important.

When it comes down to it, David Price is just one arm in a rotation that isn’t
particularly deep. But when you talk about a playoff series, or even a one-game
playoff, he can make all the difference in the world. He’s a proven ace and a
durable one that should continue to make a tremendous impact for the Toronto
Blue Jays in their quest for a playoff spot.
