David Peralta may be baseball's most underappreciated player

While they’ll likely fall far short of anything resembling a playoff
appearance, the Arizona Diamondbacks have turned in what is likely a much more
impressive season than anyone had anticipated they could have. If they’re able
to continue to flirt with .500 for the remainder of the year, it’ll likely be
labeled a success, based off of expectations alone. And it’ll be their offense
responsible for that success.

Obviously the big names are right in the middle of things for the Diamondbacks

latched onto the starting gig behind the plate with a hot bat. But the
overlooked entity in all of this, and perhaps throughout all of Major League
Baseball, is that of outfielder David Peralta.

Peralta currently ranks seventh in WAR among National League outfielders, at a
2.8 figure. That has him in front of names like Justin Upton, Joc Peterson, and
Carlos Gonzalez; no small feat given the season that each of those names has
turned in, even for the two on non-contending ballclubs. After a quietly decent
rookie campaign in 2014, he’s spun it into a large amount of success here
during the 2015 campaign.

As we prepare to hit the midway point of the month of August, Peralta is
slashing .298/.364/.511/.876. Sure, he’s the beneficiary of a high BABIP, at
.359, but that shouldn’t necessarily take away from what he’s accomplished.
His average is 15th overall in the National League, while he’s reaching base
at a clip that ranks 13th among all position players. Among NL OF, he ranks
sixth and fifth in those categories, respectively.

So how has he managed to do it? This isn’t a guy that has taken a typical road
to Major League success. He wasn’t a particularly highly touted prospect at
any point throughout his minor league career, and appeared to be more of a
stopgap option than anything else in the Arizona outfield.

For one, his approach at the plate. His 3.81 pitches per plate appearance ranks
18th among National League outfielders. He has a relatively low swing rate, at
45.4%, and is hacking at just 30.0% of pitches outside of the strike zone. As
such, he’s maintained a decent contact rate, at 77.3% and has walked at the
13th highest rate (8.8%) among NL outfielders. Not only does he make consistent
contact, but he consistently makes quality contact. His 36.1 Hard% ranks eighth
among NL OF, with a linedrive percentage up over 21%.

It all culminates in a wRC+ of 136, which portrays David Peralta as a well
above average player. That figure ranks fourth among NL outfielders, trailing
only Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen, and Gerardo Parra, who is now in the
American League with the Baltimore Orioles. When you combine his ability to
make quality contact with a .213 ISO, indicating a strong tendency to hit for
extra bases (10 home runs, 21 doubles, eight triples), you get an outfielder of
a very high caliber.

And yet, David Peralta is rarely mentioned among the better outfielders in the
game. Harper or McCutchen he, of course, is not. However, as the Diamondbacks
continue to try and work their way back into contention, this is a guy who has
carved out a place for himself in this lineup, and should continue to be
featured heavily as a key piece moving forward. If only the rest of the country
was to take any notice whatsoever.
