Report: Brandon Belt, Giants agree to five-year extension

The Giants and first baseman Brandon Belt have reportedly agreed to a
five-year extension, according to CSN's Alex Pavlovic. Pavlovic cites sources
in writing that, while financial terms were unavailable, the deal is believed
to be similar to but bigger than Brandon Crawford's six-year $75 million 
deal."

Originally a fifth-round pick, Belt has spent the last four seasons as the
Giants' primary first baseman. Over that time, he's hit .277/.352/.461 -- or
marks that, when park-adjusted, are well above the league-average threshold.
Factor in good defense at the cold corner, as well as an ability to hit
left-handed pitching, and there's no questioning that he's an
All-Star-caliber first baseman.

If there is a worrisome aspect to Belt, it's his medical record. He missed
significant time in 2014 due to concussions and, as Justin Morneau proved,
playing first base doesn't ensure one will avoid repeated issues. Still, the
Giants are clearly comfortable with the situation, and who can blame them for
jumping at opportunity? It's not every day you can lock down a proven,
high-quality part of your core for years beyond his original free-agent date.
